2013 Opportunity Scholars

Meet the Class of 2013 Opportunity Scholars. These twelve incoming freshmen distinguished themselves and have been selected to receive this prestigious full-tuition scholarship, valued at more than $46,000 over four years. They were selected from nearly 200 eligible, incoming students on the basis of academics, service to their community and a group interview. Learn more about them through the profiles below.

Anik Ahmed

Martin Luther King Jr. High School

Major: Computer and Information Science

  • Tutor English as a Second Language and assisted students with voter registration
  • Member of the Multi-Cultural Awareness Club and Business Professional of America
  • Supported Habitat for Humanity by setting up and repairing their computer network



Tamara Sibilini

Fitzgerald High School

Major: Biomedical Engineering/Pre-Med

  • Volunteer and OB/GYN observer at Oakwood Hospital and Medical Center
  • Participated in Varsity Softball, Basketball, and Track
  • Involved with Zaman International to package and deliver food to the needy


Shamima Akther

Hamtramck High School

Major: Undecided

  • Volunteered at H.O.P.E. at Dickinson East and countless blood and book drives
  • Sargent of Arms of the Student Council and member of the Student Cultural Society
  • Took part in NAEP Testing

Star International Academy 

Major: Supply Chain Management

  • Volunteer at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital
  • Historian of the National Honor Society
  • Softball Team member

Riverside Academy West

Major: Computer Engineering

  • Volunteered at ACCESS
  • Contributor and participant in Arab American Service Day
  • Tutored Middle Schools students in English and Writing


Yejideh Hatten

Romulus High School

Major: Psychology

  • Member of the Student Council and President of the Fundraising Committee
  • Member of FCCLA (Family, Career and Community Leaders of America)
  • Spent time in Italy to clean a forestry area and spent a day with the youth at a school

Rabab Alrayes

Riverside Academy West

Major: Electrical Engineering

  • ACCESS volunteer and Co-Creator of “Dress a Baby”
  • Member of Student Government and the Art Club
  • Mentor to 8th graders and a Camp Counselor


Ali Jeafar

Star International Academy

Major: Biological Sciences

  • Tutor and mentored younger students
  • Member of the Sierra Club, Amnesty International, and Change.org
  • Played a role and helped to organize food and clothing drives


Elijahwon Anderson

Inkster High School

Major: Computer Engineering

  • Volunteered at Gleaner’s Food Bank and packaged food that will serve the needy
  • A member of the Young Men of Progress organization
  • Participant in swimming, track and bowling


Emily Johnson

Lincoln Park High School

Major: Psychology

  • Served lunch for the Summer School program at the elementary school
  • Member of the Student Council Executive Board and Marching Band 
  • Read to children on “Dr. Seuss Day

Jenna Kroepel

Lincoln Park High School

Major: Undecided

  • Volunteered as a Tutor to First Graders in Reading and participated in Soccer with Autistic Children
  • Member of the National Honor Society and Editor of the Yearbook
  • Varsity Volleyball Athlete
