GPA Conversion Announcement

The University of Michigan-Dearborn will inaugurate a new system for calculating graduate student grade point averages (GPA). The Executive Board of the Rackham Graduate School and the UM-Dearborn UCDC Graduate Subcommittee have approved changing the system for converting letter grades to GPA from a 9.0 grade point system to a 4.0 grade point system, with a maximum term and cumulative GPA of 4.0. Transition to a 4.0 grade system will align the graduate programs with nearly all colleges and universities in the United States. Please note that the new UM-Dearborn graduate 4.0 grade system differs slightly from the Rackham Graduate grading system and from the UM-Dearborn undergraduate grading system.

Letter grades submitted by instructors will be converted into number values or points, as follows:

          4.0

The Registrar will implement this system for graduate students who are admitted, enrolled or active for the Summer 2014 term forward, and therefore, the change will affect those students who complete their degrees in August 2014 and thereafter. For students affected, the GPA and honor points for all terms in their current graduate program will be converted to the new 4.0 scale. Students and faculty will not be required to do anything different for this transition. Faculty will continue to submit letter grades as they have in the past. The change will affect only the honor points assigned to each grade as well as the calculation of the term and cumulative GPAs.

Persons whose degrees have been conferred prior to August 2014 will not have their degree GPA converted to the new system. Students who are returning to their program, or to a new program, will have their GPA calculated under the new system when they are admitted, readmitted, or reinstated.

In conformity with Academic policy, students will still need to maintain a cumulative GPA equivalent to a B or better. With the new system, this will be a 3.0 GPA.

Sincerely,
Enrollment Services/Registration and Records
