New Faculty Welcome Memo

TO: New UM-Dearborn Faculty

FROM: Career Services Staff

 SUBJECT: Our Services

The Career Services staff welcomes you to the University of Michigan-Dearborn. As a partner of the Student Success Center, we endorse the total development of the student. To that end, our role of helping students to prepare for their life after their academic pursuits at the University of Michigan – Dearborn is critical. Our mission is to increase the career management skills of our students and alumni while encouraging supportive interactions between our office, employers, university units, students and alumni.

Refer a Student for Services: To make good referrals, it is important to understand the nature of the services provided in Career Services. Career Services can help a student in all stages of the career planning and decision-making process. However, the assistance provided by career counselors is different from that provided by academic advisors.

Career counselors can help a student choose among educational and career options. Such career decisions may involve self-assessment activities and identifying resources that are useful in the decision-making process.

Career counselors are likely to be more useful in helping the student look at the big picture of his/her career, while an academic advisor would probably be more effective in helping the student select specific courses to achieve career goals and meet academic requirements.

Employment Opportunities for Students: Job postings for students are listed on the Career Services Web site. Some of the positions are off-campus and some are campus positions. University departments can submit their opportunities through our Web site for interested students to read. Students will then apply for the position by contacting the department representative directly. The off-campus job opportunities listed on our Web site are both part-time and full-time – they range from jobs not requiring a degree to jobs requiring advanced degrees with experience.

Request Career Workshops: Don’t Cancel That Class! UM-Dearborn faculty, staff, student organizations, and community groups may request a Career Services workshop. Career Services staff is available for presentations to campus groups (including classes and student organizations) and community organizations on a wide variety of career planning and job hunting topics, including; “choosing a major or career,” resume writing, interviewing techniques, job search strategies, workforce trends, as well as portfolios for business and liberal arts majors.

Requests should be made at least two weeks prior to the anticipated workshop date to assure availability. Workshops are designed to be 30-50 minutes long. Keep in mind that Career Services follows the academic calendar of University of Michigan-Dearborn and will be closed during school holidays and breaks.

Individual Career Counseling:Career Services counselors are available to discuss career options, job search and interviewing techniques, review salary offers, and discuss career related concerns or issues.

Career Exploration and Planning:  FOCUS is a computerized career and education planning program used to identify skills, abilities, career interests, and specific information regarding job categories. Exploratory Studies 102, Career Planning, is a one-credit hour course assisting students in utilizing strategies to chose a major, decide on a career, and practice effective job search strategies.

Job Search: Students and alumni are able to upload their resumes online, for employer direct referrals, view online job postings, and signup for campus interviews using the Internet. Related links to other web sites are also available. Campus interviews are held during the Fall and Winter semesters for our graduating students who are pursuing full-time employment.

Career Prep Week: The third week of September; students will have four ways to prepare for the 2-Day Career Week. The four days of preparation will include: (1) a networking with employers event as well as mock interviewing, (2) a resume writing critiquing event, (3) a job fair preparation workshop, and (4) an event on the importance of a professional image in the world of work. Check the Calendar of Events for details.

2-Day Career Week: Two days have been scheduled for career fairs for students and alumni during the last week of September. Employers attend to recruit candidates for full-time, part-time, and co-op positions. These career fairs are a perfect way for UM-Dearborn students to start their job campaigns. During the events, students distribute their resume, meet recruiters, investigate various careers, and hone their interviewing skills. There is also a one-day career fair for all majors scheduled in April.

The Career Services staff thanks you for taking the time to learn about our office. As you can see, we are dedicated to providing valuable programs and services to our University community. Please stop in and introduce yourself or contact us by phone or email. We welcome your comments and we would be happy to work together with you.
