Our annual On the Move: College is an Option workshop will be held at the Fairlane Center on Thursday, March 20 from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The workshop provides support and practical advice for metro area adults interested in beginning or completing their college education, particularly those facing socioeconomic challenges. Accompanied by volunteer mentors, participants attend a college course; listen to a panel discussion of returning students who share their own college experiences; and receive information about applying, registering, and paying for college. Representatives from local community colleges, universities, and human service organizations will staff informational tables.
Staff, faculty, alumni, or students can volunteer to be a workshop mentor. Mentors are seated with small groups of participants and travel with them throughout the day. The role of the mentor is to listen, encourage, offer guidance, and assist participants in getting their questions answered. We provide a brief mentor training at 8:30 a.m., the day of the workshop. No other experience is necessary, but volunteer mentors must be able to stay for the entire workshop. A complimentary breakfast and lunch is included.
