Power Electronics for Automotive Applications
Power electronics have been identified as a cross-cutting and key enabling technology vital to the development of new products and new markets in many industries such as automotive, utility power, renewable energy, and space industry. Power electronic circuits perform power conversion and control from one form of power (energy) source to a desired form by using electronic means (semiconductor devices, circuits, and digital control). It is an interdisciplinary technology and has many application areas. More particularly for automotive industry, as the enabling technology power electronics make the following things possible: (1) hybrid-electric and fuel-cell vehicles; (2) 42/14 dual voltage systems, and (3) X-by-wire systems such as electric power steering, braking, etc.
We will start the seminar with an introduction of power electronics. The application areas are briefed. Then the talk will focus on power electronics' new challenges, opportunities and research directions for automotive applications. Finally, we will extend the talk to our on-going research projects and results.
Dr. Fang Z. Peng received the B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Wuhan University, China, in 1983 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from Nagaoka University of Technology, Japan, in 1987 and 1990, respectively. He has many years of research experience in industry and national laboratory. He joined the Michigan State University in 2000. He has received many best paper awards in conferences, such as IEEE / IAS meetings. He also holds ten patents.
