Khor Virap is an inactive monastery on a hill, about 10 miles south of Yerevan. Inside the walls and dug into the hill is the pit into which St. Gregory the Enlightener was cast. This particular photo (two larger versions of which are below) was taken by Gerald Ottenbreit Jr. on Sept 14, 1997. Khor Virab is close to the Armenian-Turkish border, and you can see Mt. Ararat (both peaks--Great and Little) in the background.
