About 25% of household trash is organic waste from table scraps. This waste is biodegradable, yet typically is put out for weekly garbage pick-up. This contributes to foul odors and attracts unwanted pests, such as vermin. Once disposed of in a landfill and buried, the degradation of organic waste is slowed due to anaerobic conditions (lack of oxygen).
We are researching two different approaches to composting food waste at the EIC: vermicomposting (composting with worms,) and blatticomposting (composting with roaches.)
