The University of Michigan-Dearborn is a COMMUNITY of higher education. That’s very different than saying we are an INSTITUTION of higher education. In an institution you sit back and wait for things to happen; in a community you participate—and make a difference. We expect that every member of our UM-Dearborn community will work to change this collection of grass, glass, and bricks into a better place. In the Division of Enrollment Management and Student Life, we think that emphasis on community is well suited to advance us towards our campus goals of Enrollment Growth, Student Engagement, Michigan Excellence, and Metropolitan Impact.
EMSL (em-sull), as we call it, has responsibility for leading recruitment and student development, but we’re not just a collection of traditional student affairs offices that work in isolation from the larger community. In fact, EMSL is a group of services working together as a collaborative partner within the larger community to improve student success. We are committed to streamlining services and finding ways to bring students out of the parking lots into genuine collegiate experiences. We want to test students’ talents in the classroom rather than test their patience in navigating the bureaucracy of the University. We want to develop them as successful members of this academic community so that they can use their Michigan Education to make a difference in their future communities.
We’re building a national model of academically based enrollment management at UM-Dearborn where every office in EMSL is a retention office and where every member of our EMSL team is about student academic success. Whether we are in the Women’s Resource Center, Student Engagement, Career Services, Admissions, or Financial Aid, we are working to build student success in the classroom. To accomplish that, we are breaking down barriers between offices and blending responsibilities to enhance how we serve students—and the rest of our university community.
You’ll find on this EMSL Web site some of what’s guiding us, what we are working on, and where we hope to be in the future. Don’t hesitate to let us know if you have questions or comments about what we’re doing in EMSL or at UM-Dearborn. Welcome to our community!
