DEARBORN / Jan. 21, 2008---Kim Schatzel, associate professor of management studies and interim dean of the School of Management, has been appointed dean of the school for a five-year term effective Jan. 1.

Schatzel also was promoted to professor of management. The U-M Regents approved the appointment at their meeting in Ann Arbor last week.

“Professor Schatzel has made key contributions in developing a strong marketing and enrollment management program in the School of Management, and led the development of iLabs, the School’s Center for Innovation Research,” according to Chancellor Daniel Little.

“She also has contributed to the teaching, research and service missions of her department, the School of Management and the University, and will provide strong and effective leadership as dean.”

Schatzel received her bachelor’s degree from Washington University in 1978, and after a career in business, earned her Ph.D. in marketing from Michigan State University in 1999. She joined the UM-Dearborn faculty in 2000, became associate dean in 2006, and has served as interim dean since July.

“After a national search, Kim Schatzel was recommended for the deanship from a very strong pool of candidates and received a clear mandate of support from faculty, staff, alumni, and the business community,” according to Susan W. Martin, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs.

“Kim has been a terrific asset to the School of Management,” Martin said. “She is a gifted teacher, an innovative researcher, a well-respected colleague and a very capable administrator. Her academic qualifications are augmented by 20 years of business experience in a variety of top leadership positions in industry.”
