DEARBORN / May 2, 2006---The Institute for Local Government, a program of the School of Education at the University of Michigan-Dearborn, has received grants from the Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan and the DTE Energy Foundation in recent weeks.

The IFLG was founded in 2004 to offer a variety of programs to help develop stronger civic leadership in the region.

Courses have been developed to help new school board members learn the basics of education policies and board service; to help potential political candidates learn how to campaign for office; to help public officials develop better communications and community relations skills; and to help local officials deal with hate crimes and other instances of racial and ethnic conflict.

The DTE Energy Foundation grant will help the University develop, market and deliver the courses in the program. The Community Foundation awarded $25,000 to support curricular materials for the program.

“The mission of the Institute for Local Government is to increase the participation and capacity of citizens participating in local government within the tri-county area of southeastern Michigan,” according to Edward Bagale, UM-Dearborn vice chancellor for government relations.

“As the problems local government is asked to solve become more complex, those serving in local government need more skills than most bring to office with them,” Bagale said. “These grants from two leading local foundations will give a big boost to our efforts to enhance the quality of life for the citizens of this region.”

The Community Foundation for Southeastern Michigan, founded in 1984, “is a permanent community endowment built by gifts from hundreds of individuals and organizations committed to the future of southeastern Michigan,” according to a statement from the organization.
