UM-Dearborn to host joint emergency preparedness exercise on Tuesday, Aug. 9

DEARBORN, MICH. / Aug. 4, 2011 - University of Michigan-Dearborn, city of Dearborn and Oakwood Healthcare will participate in a joint emergency preparedness exercise on Tuesday, Aug. 9.  The exercise is being conducted to evaluate the emergency preparedness of the three organizations.  The specific aspects of emergency preparedness that will be tested include Emergency Operations Center implementation, communications and cross-jurisdiction command operations.

There will be several emergency vehicles and personnel on campus on this day.  

This is ONLY a training exercise.  

Below is an outline of events:
8:30 a.m.     Exercise begins at UM-Dearborn campus
9:00 a.m.     Simulated bomb explosion occurs on campus
9:15 a.m.     Incident Command Center established on campus
9:35 a.m.     “Injured” student volunteers transported to local hospitals
9:40 a.m.     Student volunteers arrive at Oakwood campuses in Dearborn, Wayne, Taylor & Canton
10:00 a.m.     Exercise continues internally on campus and at local hospitals
1:00 p.m.     Exercise concludes


The following arrangements have been made for the media interested in covering the event.

8:00 – 8:30 a.m.

The following spokespeople will be available for comment on the UM-Dearborn campus, 4901 Evergreen Road, Dearborn:

The above individuals will be stationed outside the main entrance of the Mardigian Library located in the center of campus.  Parking is available in the parking lots just west of Evergreen Road.

Please note – after 8:30 a.m. the above individuals will be involved in the exercise and not available for comment.

9:00 – 9:45 a.m.

There will be a staging area on the UM-Dearborn campus, near the science building, to capture photographs and video of the crisis event.   The Incident Command Center and decontamination station will be located in Parking Lot C, located on the northern edge of campus.   

Visuals include – student volunteers badly injured in a campus explosion, emergency workers assisting injured student volunteers, decontamination of student volunteers, transporting of student volunteers to local hospitals and emergency personnel assembled in command center.

9:45 – 10:30 a.m.

There will be a staging area at Oakwood Hospital & Medical Center, 18101 Oakwood Blvd., Dearborn, to capture the student volunteers arriving at the facility and outdoor evaluations of arriving patients.  

Visuals include student volunteers arriving at hospital, decontamination of arriving student volunteers and hospital emergency operations staged outside of the hospital entrance.
