Annual event at UM-Dearborn helps students and their families with financial aid forms
January 12, 2009
DEARBORN / Jan. 12, 2009---Families with children who are seeking to enter college can receive help completing their college financial aid forms at the University of Michigan-Dearborn on Sunday, Feb. 8.
The event, called College Goal Sunday, will take place from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in a new campus location this year: the Fairlane Center South building, located at 19000 Hubbard Drive.
During the event, the Fairlane Center will offer computer access for families to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) online at www.fafsa.ed.gov.
College Goal Sunday, which began in Indiana in 1989, will serve 29 Michigan communities this year. This is UM-Dearbornís fifth year participating in the national program.
"Families are often intimidated by completing the FAFSA and make the mistake of delaying the application, or not applying at all," said Sally Foster, senior financial aid officer. "Completing the FAFSA is one of the first steps that a student can take to help maximize the opportunity for financial aid."
Financial aid professionals from UM-Dearborn's Office of Financial Aid will be joined by representatives from the University as well as financial aid officers from other area colleges to help students and their families complete the FAFSA.
The FAFSA completed online at the event is the primary means to determine eligibility for most loans, grants and other aid nationwide, according to Foster. To complete the FAFSA, parents or students should bring their family's most recent tax return (2008 or 2007), and their 2008 W-2 forms and other income records, information on the value of savings and checking accounts and investments as well as a driverís license or state identification card. Students younger than 23 years old are encouraged to attend with a parent or guardian.
