U-M Board of Regents approve 2011-12 Tuition Rates

DEARBORN / June 16, 2011--This week the University of Michigan Board of Regents will consider a proposed 6.9 percent increase in undergraduate and graduate tuition for students at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.  The Regents will also consider the University’s proposed 2011-12 operating budget.

“While it is always a difficult decision to raise tuition, the University is committed to academic excellence, retaining and attracting the best faculty, preserving a robust student learning environment and making a Michigan education accessible to all students,” said Daniel Little, chancellor, UM-Dearborn. “Aggressive University budget reduction efforts helped restrain the proposed increase after receiving the largest state appropriation reduction in campus history.”

A typical in-state, full-time undergraduate student with 12 credit hours would pay an average of $4,814 in tuition and fees per semester starting in September 2011.  The cost of tuition and fees for graduate students varies from program to program.

UM-Dearborn has also increased its financial aid budget by 15 percent to help off set the tuition increase and help ensure a Michigan education is accessible to students from all socioeconomic backgrounds.

The state of Michigan continues to experience unprecedented financial difficulties.  The University is committed to working creatively and in partnership with Governor Snyder and the state legislature to best serve the residents of the state of Michigan.  

UM-Dearborn has redirected $6 million from its operating budget over the past eight years to support expenditures of the highest priority.  Savings have resulted from building energy conservation measures, increases to employee health care contributions, bank fee savings, ownership transfer of the Henry Ford Estate, the migration of print materials online and streamlining purchasing practices with the Ann Arbor and Flint campuses.  Faculty and staff have also worked hard to increase University revenue through additional research funding, fundraising efforts and rental income.

The value of a Michigan degree has never been more important in making a difference in students’ lives and increasing the talent pool for Michigan’s current and emerging industries.  The governor has indentified the number of adults with college degrees as a benchmark to personal well-being and state prosperity.
