Basic Admission Requirements

Are You Qualified to Apply?

All graduate applicants are required to meet the following minimum requirements for admission:

  • Completion of a four-year bachelor’s degree from a regionally-accredited university or college, or its equivalent. Some degrees may not be equivalent to a U.S. bachelor's degree. If your three-year degree is from India, Canada, Australia, or certain other countries, we will not consider the degree to be eligible for graduate admission as a standalone credential. If you have a National Diploma (ND)/Higher National Diploma (HND) combination or standalone HND, we will not consider the degree(s) eligible for graduate admission as standalone credential(s). This is our policy even if the degree(s) have been evaluated as equivalent to a four-year degree by an outside credential evaluator. If you have completed an honours degree, a post-graduate diploma, or a graduate degree, with your three-year bachelor’s, you may be eligible to apply. If you are unsure about the equivalency of your educational experience(s), you are encouraged to obtain an Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) course-by-course evaluation. Our equivalency guidelines are generally aligned with those of ECE for determining equivalency to a U.S. bachelor’s degree.
  • Applicants whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency. For more information, please review our proficiency requirements

Applicants who still need to complete their final year of study (ex. completed up to sixth semester in a eight-term program) to earn their degree may apply; the degree must be completed before your first term of enrollment in our graduate program would begin. A final, official transcript and proof of degree earned would be required as a condition of admission.

Additional Requirements

Additional requirements vary by program. UM-Dearborn graduate programs are all test optional. A summary of basic prerequisites (i.e. undergraduate degree or major required, prerequisite courses, work experience or other credential that might be required) can be accessed by clicking on the college where your program is housed below.  If you are not sure where a program of study is housed, please explore our programs by college. Graduate Certificate requirements are outlined separately

A holistic review of each applicant is conducted. Admission is granted to applicants who have been recommended for admission by the program to which they have applied. Preference is generally given to students who have at least a B average (3.0 in a 4.0 grading system) in relevant undergraduate coursework or otherwise provide evidence of promise that is satisfactory to the admitting program.
