Instructions for setting up WiFi

Information for connecting to MWireless, eduroam, MGuest and MSetup can be found on the Get Connected page. For optimal wireless performance, it is recommended to follow the instructions located on this page only.

MWireless
Students, faculty, staff, and sponsored affiliates with a valid U-M email address and password should use MWireless when on campus because it is secure and encrypted. MWireless users may be blocked from visiting known malicious websites.

eduroam
eduroam is available to students, faculty and staff both here and when visiting other universities and colleges, and should be configured through MSetup before visiting other institutions. Users of eduroam can seamlessly transition between participating universities around the world. Note: When visiting other eduroam institutions, you are subject to their internet acceptable use policies.

MGuest
MGuest provides basic internet access for university guests. Students, faculty, and staff are encouraged to use MWireless as their primary network, as it is secure and encrypted. Access to certain university resources, including academic journals, is limited. Guests must agree to the university's terms of service and devices that cannot display a captive portal are not able to connect. Content is filtered to block most audio/video streaming services, gaming, and bittorrent.

MSetup
MSetup helps you to register and connect your devices to the U-M wireless campus network. When connecting your home devices such as a laptop, phone or tablet you can configure your devices by using the MWireless or eduroam for network access.

UM Wi-Fi networks allow students, faculty, staff, and guests to connect wireless devices to the internet and to UM networks. There are four Wi-Fi networks on the Dearborn campus.

Network Services

ITS provides networking throughout campus buildings and maintains our firewall policy. We maintain miles of networking cable used within our campus buildings to connect users to the internet and campus IT resources. In an effort to reduce our security footprint and to conserve network resources, each network jack may be subject to termination if there is no use for 6 consecutive months. Faculty and staff may ask for a network jack to be reconnected to the network.

Ann Arbor ITS administers and maintains our core network which includes routing to the internet, network distribution to campus buildings, wireless, VPN, and firewall administration.

VPN

ITS offers a secure Virtual Private Network (VPN) service which will be automatically installed on your campus computer. Step-by-step instructions for a personal computer.

When should I use the VPN?

  • When using University systems or transmitting personal data while off-campus.
  • When accessing IT applications that are otherwise only available while on campus.
  • While traveling overseas and/or while in a foreign country (Travel safe with technology).
