School of Management partners with Fed for seminars
DEARBORN---University of Michigan-Dearborn School
of Management faculty members will be participating in Money Smart
Week, an inaugural series of seminars devoted to combat financial illiteracy
and provide greater education to consumers in southeast Michigan.
Money Smart Week will take place April 26-30 and many of the sessions,
which are free and open to the public, will be held at the Fairlane Center.
The Detroit branch of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, along with 26 local organizations, joined together to create Money Smart Week, according to Prof. Michael Foran, chair of the Department of Accounting and Finance and Money Smart project director.
John Kaplan, executive-in-residence in the School of Management, will kick off the week-long series on April 26 with a presentation on "Family Budgeting: How to Live Within Your Income" from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in Room 148, Fairlane Center. Kaplan will discuss techniques for developing and managing a family budget, including a projection of income, prioritization of expenditures, providing for uncertainty, intra-family negotiation and measuring results.
Elaine Green, School of Management internship director, will present "How to Go After and Land That Job" at 9 a.m. Friday, April 30 in Room 148, Fairlane Center. Greene will explain how to make a powerful first impression with a professionally written resume. She also will offer advice on interview skills and how to answer tough questions, as well as how to search for career opportunities.

The Money Smart Advisory Council expects to present more than 50 free or low-cost events in metropolitan Detroit during Money Smart Week in the spirit of community outreach, volunteerism, and philanthropy, according to its Web site.
