Songwriter to present workshop, performance
DEARBORN---Singer/songwriter Judy Gorman will present a workshop and
performance called "Multicultural History of Women and Music: Finding
Our Own Voice--All of Us" Thursday, Feb. 19 in the College of Arts,
Sciences, and Letters (CASL) Building on the University of Michigan-Dearborn
The event, which is free and open to the public, is funded by a diversity
challenge grant from the UM-Dearborn Office of the Provost and sponsored
by the Women's Studies Program.
The workshop will run from 1:25 p.m. to 2:40 p.m. in Room 1030, CASL
Building. Gorman will discuss women and music throughout history and examine
four types of women's songs: songs of bitter/bittersweet complaint; songs
of women who rebel; songs of women organizing for economic, political
and social gains; and songs of women's courage, pride, hope and power.
Following the workshop, Gorman will perform songs rooted in folk, blues,
jazz and gospel music from her two CDs during an hour-long concert from
3 p.m. to 4 p.m. in Room 1030, CASL Building. Gorman's songs can be sampled

Gorman has performed at clubs, universities, festivals and peace and
justice events across the United States and abroad. She has shared stages
with artists such as Ani DiFranco, Richie Havens, Sweet Honey in the Rock,
Pete Seeger, Suzanne Vega, Odetta, James Earl Jones, Laura Nyro and Maya
Angelou. She also appeared in the film In Our Hands along with Meryl Streep,
Rita Marley, James Taylor and Carly Simon.
Born and educated in New York City, Gorman earned a bachelor's degree in literature and a master's degree in art history. Before touring full time as a musician, she taught English in Chinatown, worked at the Guggenheim Museum and Metropolitan Museum of Art, and produced radio programs for Pacifica Radio's WBAI FM in New York City.
