Fairlane Center open for classes as semester begins

DEARBORN--While most members of the University of Michigan-Dearborn campus community enjoyed the break between semesters, faculty and staff in the campus's schools of education and of management worked long hours to complete the move to the Fairlane Center.

Classes will begin this week at the Center, the former Fairlane Training and Development Center, which was acquired from Ford Motor Company last year.

More than 280 boxes of materials were moved just for the reading lab and instructional media center at the School of Education alone, according to Elaine Bergel, senior instructional associate.

Bergel says the new rooms are a vast improvement on those programs' previous spaces in the Mardigian Library, allowing greater access to the tools and materials that the future teachers need. "This will give our students a better sense of what an instructional materials center can do," she said. "They will be able to complete more ambitious and finished projects with more space and a better working environment."

Administrative associate Shirley Solomon reported that the School of Education required more than 1,200 boxes for the move, plus furniture. "And they did it in two days," she said. "I still have boxes to unpack, but most of our equipment is up and running."

A shuttle bus will run every 20 minutes between the Fairlane Center and the University Center beginning this week. The service will be available Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. until 4 p.m., and is available for all faculty, staff and students with a valid UMID card.
