Partnership helps transfer students with undergraduate science degrees

DEARBORN---A new partnership between the University of Michigan-Dearborn's College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters and Henry Ford Community College will make it easier for students earning associate degrees in pre-professional biology and chemistry at HFCC to seek a bachelor of science degree at UM-Dearborn.

The agreement allows HFCC students to seamlessly transfer up to 62 credit hours toward an undergraduate science degree at UM-Dearborn.

"One of the special strengths built in to this agreement is the potential to jointly promote biology and chemistry careers to high school markets," according to Paul Wong, CASL Dean. "This partnership with Henry Ford Community College allows for the recruitment of interested students who would begin at HFCC in these two pre-professional areas and then transfer to UM-Dearborn after earning one of HFCC's newly created associate degrees."

Charles Jacobs, associate dean of science at HFCC, added, "We hope to afford students, who might not immediately be ready for the four-year college environment, the benefits of small class size and a highly trained professional staff.

"We also recruit a number of top-notch biology and chemistry students who attend HFCC for a number of reasons. This agreement will help UM-Dearborn attract them 'across the berm' to complete their degrees. By establishing this partnership with UM-Dearborn, we can help students begin their studies at HFCC and complete them in an integrated program with a respected four-year university," Jacobs said.
