Women to learn about college March 21 at UM-Dearborn's
'Women on the Move'
The event, which is sponsored by Ameritech/SBC Global Network, is a one-day program that introduces UM-Dearborn to women receiving services through area non-profit agencies.
The program is in its fifth year of pairing volunteer mentors with metro Detroit women to learn about campus support groups and how other women deal with the challenges of returning to school.
Accompanied by mentors, participants will learn how to apply to college, register for classes and apply for financial aid and scholarships. There will be panel discussions by returning women students from UM-Dearborn who will share their own college experiences.
Brenda Lawrence, mayor of the city of Southfield, will be the event's keynote speaker. Other speakers of the day will include Paul Wong; dean of the College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters at UM-Dearborn; Linda Brown, registrar and assistant vice chancellor at UM-Dearborn; and other university staff members.
The program is a collaboration among the Women's Studies Program and the Commission for Women at UM-Dearborn; United Way Community Services; the Business Professional Women's Organization; the American Association of University Women; Soroptimist of Flat Rock; Soroptimist International, and other organizations in the area. Many of the participants are referred through community-based organizations.
