U-M Regents to hold hearings on Dearborn campus regarding certification of safety officers
DEARBORN---University of Michigan Regents will conduct public hearings
at the Dearborn campus in December to consider whether to certify some
of the campus's public safety officers, allowing them to take on greater
law enforcement powers and responsibilities.
The hearings will be held from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 5 in
Room 1030 of UM-Dearborn's College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters Building;
and from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 8 in Room 1400 in the campus's
Social Sciences Building.
"Over the past several years, we have had many discussions among
faculty, students and staff around the issue of enhancing the safety of
the campus community through seeking certification for some safety officers,"
according to UM-Dearborn Chancellor Daniel Little.
"After long consideration and deliberation, we decided to recommend
to the U-M Regents that this campus join the overwhelming majority of
other public universities in Michigan and adopt a certification program
for some of our campus safety officers," Little said.
The public hearings scheduled at the Dearborn campus are required by
the state law governing the certification of safety officers at public
