UM-Dearborn joins other institutions in offering to help university students in hurricane areas

DEARBORN---The University of Michigan-Dearborn has joined other institutions in offering to help university students and faculty members whose lives and academic careers have been disrupted by Hurricane Katrina.

"All of us are shocked and distressed at the news from New Orleans and the Gulf region as the consequences of Hurricane Katrina continue to impact the lives of so many people there," Chancellor Daniel Little said in a message to the campus community on Friday, Sept. 2. "Some faculty members and students on this campus have strong connections to that region and there can be no doubt that they have been deeply affected by this catastrophe."

The campus's undergraduate admissions office has begun working with students in universities in the affected region to continue their educations until they are able to return to their home institutions.

"We also are open to considering ways we can support faculty members from those schools," Little said. "While it is probably too early to know exactly what role we can play to help those institutions recover, I know that we stand together as a campus ready to help."

The campus's Office of Undergraduate Admissions has posted information for affected students at, and staff members are available to discuss options with students at (313) 593-5100.
