OCEL is proud to co-sponsor the Ginsberg Center's Community Engagement @ Michigan sessions along with the Institute for Research on Women and Gender. This series addresses critical topics in community-engaged teaching and learning, research, scholarship, and program/project development. Through seminars and events, this faculty and professional development series supports faculty, staff, administrators, post-docs, and graduate students at U-M who are interested in learning about or further developing community-driven practice. Participants engage with strategies and approaches to develop and sustain community partnerships for research & teaching, prepare students to work with communities, emphasize civic learning across disciplines, develop and refine course-based and program curriculum, and more.

Ways that OCEL supports faculty

OCEL supports faculty community engagement in a range of different ways.  The office does this by:

  • Assisting faculty and staff in collaborating with nonprofit and community partners;
  • Supporting project and programs that advance faculty research and student learning;
  • Providing annual seed grant funding that support community-based research, community engagement and related programming with community partners; and
  • Raising the profile of community partnerships among campus and external constituents by publicly recognizing the work of engaged faculty.

Seed Grants

“OMI’s [OCEL's] seed grant program made our project possible. There are not a lot of funders willing to risk much on research that straddles academic and community interests. Not only was OMI [OCEL] enthusiastic about the proposal they have remained an essential partner as the project expanded."  Joshua Akers, Assistant Professor of Geography and Urban and Regional Studies
