Announcing New COVID-19 Campus Dashboard 9/10/2020

Dear Colleagues,

The fall semester is off to a great start. Our health and safety measures and community compliance are working to protect our campus and allow for select in-person course instruction while continuing our educational mission with remote and hybrid modalities.

We are pleased to share a university dashboard that will foster transparency and allow the public to monitor COVID-19-related data for our campus. This site reports the following information:

  • Students, faculty and staff who are expected to be on campus for work or classes and have tested positive for COVID-19 since August 31, 2020.  These numbers are broken down into two categories:
    • Those who have had close contact with others while on campus
    • Those who have not had close contact with others on campus
  • The number of students, faculty and staff that completed health screenings at academic buildings
  • State and regional positive COVID-19 cases and trends that include detailed information for the metro Detroit area and the city of Dearborn

The above information will be reported and the website updated every Monday by 9 a.m., reflecting data from the previous week. Student, faculty and staff cases will be reported in aggregate to maintain confidentiality.

Outside of the dashboard, the university will not communicate broadly (to all faculty, staff and students) about positive cases unless there is a need to pivot instructional mode for the entire campus due to increased COVID-19 exposure. University leadership has a detailed notification process in place to ensure that a timely and accurate communication is sent at the individual and/or classroom level to those impacted by a confirmed COVID-19 case on campus.

There have been two recent developments worth noting.

Although Governor Whitmer recently announced gyms in our region may reopen with various safety measures to protect patrons, our Fieldhouse and Wellness Center will remain closed for the remainder of the fall semester. We are making this decision out of an abundance of caution to keep the population on campus low and protect the safety of our community.

The CDC recently announced face coverings with exhale valves or vents do not prevent the spread of COVID-19. These types of face coverings are not permitted on campus. As a reminder, face coverings are available at the health screening entrances of all open academic buildings.

Thank you for your commitment to keeping the UM-Dearborn healthy and safe.

With all good wishes for continued success this semester,

Go Safe - Go Blue - Go Dearborn!
