Election Uncertainty (November 4, 2020)

Dear Faculty, Staff and Students,

In the aftermath of this heavily contested presidential election there may be a sense of bitterness and unresolved feelings by members of our community but I believe our campus spirit, unity and mutual respect will carry us forward. UM-Dearborn is committed to, and defined by, being a caring, diverse and welcoming community for students, faculty and staff with a wide range of experiences, backgrounds and perspectives. Our university is committed to being a safe place to learn and express our thoughts freely while gaining understanding from interacting with others.

We will continue to monitor the results of the election as they are determined by state and local officials and will work to anticipate the implications and potential long-term impact on our university, our community and our nation. With increased turnout, a higher use of mailed ballots and new procedures implemented to ensure the integrity of our election, all ballots have yet to be tallied. This uncertainty can be unsettling for many but we have every reason to trust local election officials across the country to ensure a fair and impartial counting and report of the official returns.

These are uncertain and unsettling times and this election understandably has added stress during an already pandemic-driven enervating period in our lives. The UM-Dearborn Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) team continues to support our students. If you are struggling with anxiety, loneliness or other difficult emotions caused by current events, I encourage you to visit the CAPS website. Faculty and staff can reach out to the Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office (FASCCO).

I know that as a university campus we will continue to care for each other, led by our belief in the values of mutual respect, equity and inclusivity. That is our only way forward towards a bright future. Fortunately, that is also the Michigan way.
