Regarding the Recent Mass Violence (March 23, 2021)

Dear Colleagues,

It is difficult to comprehend that while still recovering from last week's mass shooting in Atlanta, we must grapple with yet another horrific mass shooting incident that happened yesterday in Boulder, Colorado. Ten people, including a heroic police officer responding to a call for help, were killed senselessly in a place of presumed safety and a staple of everyday American life, a supermarket. These events occurring with unwelcome frequency continue to shake us to our core. They can not be normalized or accepted as part of ordinary life.

We are all again saddened and diminished by the needless loss of life and express sympathy for the loved ones of those who lost their lives. The UM-Dearborn community must remain committed to our focus on inclusion, caring for one another and lifting our community during already difficult times. Our values bind us and make us strong.

While this incident did not happen near our campus, students who need assistance during this difficult time can receive it through Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Faculty and staff may seek support through the Faculty and Staff Counseling and Consultation Office (FASCCO). If you are experiencing or see something that concerns you, please contact public safety at 313-593-5333.

These times of deep sorrow and sadness remind us that we must forever remain steadfast in our commitment to the peaceful and caring values that define our community.

With sadness,

Domenico Grasso
