Instructional Faculty Guidelines for Student or Faculty (Personal) COVID Cases

During the Fall 2020 semester you may experience, or encounter a student, with any of the following:

  • Feeling ill with COVID-19 symptoms
  • Testing positive for COVID-19
  • Having close contact or living with someone recently diagnosed with COVID-19
If you or the student is feeling ill or tests positive for COVID-19:

Student: If you learn of a student with any of the above, please direct them to contact the Dean of Students’ office at 313-593-5056 or email DearbornCOVIDsupport@umich.edu. The phone line is staffed, the email address is monitored by Student Affairs, and the Dean of Students’ office is the central repository for student cases.

The Dean of Students’ office will reach out to the student and ask a series of questions regarding the onset of symptoms, when they tested positive, and/or when they were in close contact with the person recently diagnosed with COVID-19. The Dean of Students’ office works collaboratively with the Office of Emergency Management (OEM) to identify all potential close contacts for the local health department, and will contact the instructor and department chair. If the student was in a lab/class within three days from the onset of symptoms, everyone in that lab/class, including the instructor, will be required to stay off campus for 14 days.

Faculty/Lab Instructors In-person: If you feel too ill to teach or test positive for COVID-19, you are to immediately notify your discipline/department chair and Human Resources at 313-593-5190. You will receive a call from one of the UM-Dearborn contact tracers; please answer this call (this call will be coming from a cell line) as they will have a few questions for you to answer.

Faculty Fully Remote: If you start feeling ill or test positive for COVID-19, you are to immediately notify your discipline/department chair and Human Resources at 313-593-5190. If you are not feeling ill and can continue to teach, please feel free to do so at your discretion. If you are too sick to continue your remote instruction, please notify your discipline/department chair and Human Resources.

Please wait on an official university communication if your class is to be quarantined; this official notification will be from the College Dean and/or Provost.

If you receive a call from a local health department and have been identified as having a close contact or living with someone recently diagnosed with COVID-19:

Student: If a student has had close contact or is living with someone recently diagnosed with COVID-19, the student will not be able to attend lab/class and will be required to quarantine and monitor for symptoms as directed by local public health officials.

Faculty In-Person: If you have had close contact or live with someone recently diagnosed with COVID-19, you will not be able to teach the in-person lab/class and will be required to quarantine and monitor for symptoms as directed by local public health officials. You are welcome to move your course to remote instruction during this quarantine period. You will also need to notify your discipline chair and Human Resources at 313-593-5190.

Faculty Fully Remote: Please continue to teach remotely while also continuing to observe all pre-existing protocols.
