With the continually shifting situation regarding the COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) public health emergency, the University is committed to protecting your health and safety by minimizing potential spread of the disease. Our admission procedures have been updated as we operate remotely. Please review our updated instructions below. We are still very committed to supporting prospective graduate students.
The University of Michigan-Dearborn is committed to building a diverse learning community. We serve highly motivated candidates whose accomplishments suggest the ability to successfully complete a rigorous program of graduate study. Applicants are evaluated not only for academic ability, but for career goals and overall "fit" for their selected program of study. Applicants should carefully review the available graduate programs and choose one that is most appropriate for their future goals.
All correspondence must be in English and should contain the full legal name of the applicant, as shown on a passport or other government-issued identification. It is vital that your full legal name is included on all materials submitted to ensure proper and timely matching of supporting documents to your application. If there are any discrepancies, you must notify the Office of Graduate Studies. All applicants have the opportunity to disclose any previous names on the application prior to submission.

How to Apply
To create a new application, please click “Sign up” in our online application portal. Create your login details and follow on-screen instructions. A valid email address is required to create and verify your account.
Your application does not need to be completed all at once, as your login and password will allow you to return at a later date. If you need to make changes to your application (information or updated documents), do not complete a new application. Reach out to the Office of Graduate Studies via email and a staff member can either provide guidance or update that information for you.
Submission of an online application requires payment of a $60 application fee. Some applicants may be eligible for a fee waiver. The application fee is nonrefundable and cannot be credited toward tuition or any other fees. The fee can be paid by credit or debit card (Visa, Mastercard or Discover).
Please note: An applicant may only apply to one program at a time. After an admission decision is made on the first program, the student can apply to one other program, but will have to submit a new application and fee. Details needed for submission of a second application will need to be coordinated with the Office of Graduate Studies.

General instructions (though some programs may have other guidelines): Please describe your post-graduation career plans. How will your education, experience, and development to date help support those plans? How will this graduate program help you to attain your goals? Preferred length is around 500 words.
Statements must be uploaded with the online application as a PDF or Word document. Please note that the document name should not contain any special characters or spaces. The online application cannot be submitted without a Statement of Purpose.
Clinical Health Psychology Applicants
Applicants to the Clinical Health Psychology program should provide an additional page (no more than 300 words) briefly describing events or experiences you consider to be evidence that you will be an effective health care professional. This could include work or school experience, life experiences, personal philosophy, or other information. Statements must be uploaded with the online application as a PDF or Word document. The online application cannot be submitted without a Clinical Health Psychology Additional Statement.
The academic statement of purpose should indicate the intended field or fields of research. A personal statement is also required that describes the background and life experiences, including cultural, geographical, financial, educational or other opportunities or challenges that motivate the decision to pursue a Ph.D. degree at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
The Statement of purpose should include a research topic and research plan. It is strongly suggested to identify a faculty advisor at the time of application. A faculty advisor must be identified after admission and before enrollment.
Two-page limit for master's applicants; Four-page limit for doctoral or specialist applicants. Please include education information; work experience; research, teaching, or internship experience; professional affiliations, volunteer activities; community engagement; and relevant honors or awards.
Resumes must be uploaded with the online application as a PDF or Word document. Please note that the document name should not contain any special characters or spaces. The online application cannot be submitted without a Resume.
The number of recommendations required by college is listed below. If you do not know where your program of interest is housed, please review our graduate programs offered by college.
- College of Arts, Sciences, and Letters (CASL): 3
- College of Business (COB): 1
- College of Education, Health, and Human Services (CEHHS): 3
- College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS): 2 for master’s level; 3 for doctoral level
There are exceptions to the required number posted above for current UM-Dearborn undergraduate students eligible for a 4+1 option:
- Students eligible for the 4+1 option in the MS in Criminology and Criminal Justice (CCJ) program are only required to submit 1 recommendation from CCJ faculty.
- Students eligible for the 4+1 option in the MS in Accounting program are not required to submit a letter of recommendation.
- Students eligible for the 4+1 option in the MSE in Bioengineering program must use recommenders from the UM-Dearborn ME/BENG faculty.
- Students eligible for the 4+1 option in the MA in Educational Technology program are only required to submit 1 recommendation from an Educational Technology faculty member or instructor.
- Students eligible for the 4+1 option in the MS in Applied Behavior Analysis program are only required to submit 1 recommendation from a UM-Dearborn faculty member or instructor.
- Students eligible for the 4+1 option in the MS in Applied and Computational Mathematics program are only required to submit 2 recommendations from mathematics or statistics faculty.
Appropriate recommenders are generally current or former professional supervisors or academic instructors. Additional questions about whether or not a potential recommender can be used should be directed to the academic program.
In the online application, you are required to enter your recommender(s) name and email address. As soon as you enter in your recommender's email address and save, a notification will be sent. We highly recommend reaching out to your recommender prior to completing this section of the application. Additionally, you will select whether or not you waive the right to review the recommendations if you are admitted and enroll in courses.
After submitting your application, you can monitor the status of received recommendations. If your recommenders have not submitted their recommendation through the online system, you will be able to send them reminders. You are also able to change a recommender through the online application portal. The reminder notification is a duplicate of the original request, so we would encourage you to reach out to your recommender(s) separately in addition to clicking the “send reminder” button in the application portal.
Official transcripts for all colleges/universities attended, regardless of whether a degree was earned. All colleges/universities should be reported within the online application, including the University of Michigan-Dearborn and credit transferred into a University of Michigan-Dearborn degree.
How to Submit
Official transcripts are required for admission review. An official transcript is securely sent directly from the institution via their approved means or received in an envelope sealed by the issuing institution, bearing the institutional seal and the official signature of the Registrar or Recorder of Records.
- Electronic transcripts can be submitted to email@example.com. Electronic delivery is only accepted when sent directly from the institution, by a Registrar or similar official of the university. Transcripts sent by the applicant via email will be considered unofficial.
- If an electronic transcript cannot be sent by your institution, please submit an unofficial copy to firstname.lastname@example.org while we operate remotely to slow the spread of the coronavirus pandemic. If unofficial records are used to make an admission decision, the official documents will be required when normal operations resume.
Transcripts can also be sent by mail, with delayed processing as we operate remotely.

Current or Previous UM-Dearborn Students
If you are a current or prior student of the University of Michigan-Dearborn, you can authorize the Office of the Registrar to release your transcript(s) for the purpose of graduate admission consideration by simply checking the appropriate box on the online application. If you do not authorize the release of your transcripts to our office, you will be responsible for requesting the transcripts on your own.
Third-party evaluations provided by a credential service, for example, Educational Credentials Evaluators (ECE) or World Education Services (WES) are not accepted (except MAT*). The University of Michigan-Dearborn campus internally completes an evaluation of all international academic records to confirm degree equivalency and calculate a U.S.-equivalent cumulative GPA. *Teaching (MAT) applicants who have transcripts from non-U.S. institutions may also be required to submit ECE Course-by-Course Evaluations to aid in developing a plan of study that appropriately meets the requirements of a content major and (if chosen) a content minor.
In cases where the original document is in a language other than English, a version in the native language AND an official English language translation must be provided. We ask that you do not send your only copy of your academic records for submission. Materials received by the university for admission purposes will not be returned to you.
Semester Marksheets or Gradesheets
If your institution issues individual semester marksheets/gradesheets, we require official or institution-attested copies for all semesters attended and showing all attempts at courses. These copies of your marksheets should be attested, signed and stamped, by the registrar, controller of examinations, principal, department head, or an institution official of similar status. Validation of credentials may be required.
Any applicant whose native language is not English must demonstrate English proficiency in one of the following ways:
- Submit official scores from an approved English language proficiency exam
- Meet the criteria for an exemption from taking an English language proficiency exam
- Successful completion of Level 5 of the UM-Dearborn English Language Proficiency Program (ELPP)
English Language Proficiency Exams
Accepted English language proficiency exams are the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Applicants only need to take one of these test options. Achieving the minimum score does not guarantee admission, only consideration. You may take any of the exams more than once, but only your most recent score will be considered. Scores must be no more than 2 years old.
*We are aware that the current coronavirus outbreak has resulted in accessibility challenges for our normally accepted English proficiency exam options in many regions. In response to this, we will temporarily accept the Duolingo English Test, IELTS Indicator, and TOEFL ITP Plus for China. Doctoral programs in the College of Engineering and Computer Science (Ph.D. and D.Eng.) and the Psychology (MS) program are not accepting the Duolingo English Test to meet the English language proficiency requirement.
Please see below for minimum required scores for each proficiency test:
- IELTS (Academic)/IELTS Indicator: Overall score of 6.5
- IELTS scores are received electronically. An institution code is not required. Use the following information to locate our institution: University of Michigan, Dearborn - Graduate Studies.
- IBT Internet-Based Test: Overall score of 84
- PBT Paper-Based Test: Overall score of 560
- ITP for China: Overall score of 560
- Our ETS Institution Code for TOEFL registration is 1861. Individual department codes are not necessary for the TOEFL. As long as the institution code is used, your scores will be electronically delivered to us.
- At this time we are not accepting the TOEFL MyBestScore to meet our English language proficiency requirement and will continue to require the posted overall minimum score for an individual test.
- Duolingo English Test
- Duolingo: Overall score of 105

English Language Proficiency Exemption Policy
Applicants are exempt from providing an English language proficiency score if they meet one of the following criteria. Exemptions are not allowed if insufficient English language proficiency scores are reported.
- Applicants who have earned or will earn an accredited bachelor's or master's degree from a country where the official language is English (United States of America, Australia, or United Kingdom) are exempt from submitting an Official English Proficiency Score.
- Applicants who have earned or will earn an accredited bachelor's or master's degree from an institution where the language of instruction is exclusively English are exempt from submitting an Official English Proficiency Score. Verification from the school is required. Please contact the Office of Graduate Studies for further details regarding verification for your case. *
*The following graduate degree programs in the College of Engineering and Computer Science will not grant an exemption based on language of instruction and require submission of an accepted English Language Proficiency exam if a Bachelor or Master degree has not been earned from an accredited institution in the United States, Australia, or United Kingdom:

English Language Proficiency Program (ELPP)
Beginning Fall 2020, graduate degree-seeking applicants who have not met the English language proficiency requirement have the opportunity to request conditional admission review. If offered admission with this condition, the student will enroll in the UM-Dearborn English Language Proficiency Program (ELPP). Once the student has achieved proficiency through Level 5 of the ELPP, they become eligible to register for academic courses in their field of study the following semester.
To request conditional admission review with ELPP enrollment, applicants must take the following steps:
- Submit a degree-seeking application and all materials outlined in the How to Apply instructions
- Submit an ELPP Application for the same term (In your portal, select "Start A New Application" and under "Non-Degree and Certifications, select "English Language Proficiency Program"). The ELPP application does not have an application fee.
- Complete the Conditional Admission Review Request form
Once all other supplemental materials except for sufficient English language proficiency scores have been received and the internal international transcript evaluation is complete, the degree-seeking application will be routed for conditional admission consideration.
The following programs do not participate in this option:

To find out if your program requires a standardized test, please review the admission requirements page. Expired test scores will not be accepted. GRE and GMAT scores are valid for five years from the test date.
We advise use of your legal name as stated on your passport or birth certificate when registering for any standardized test and when completing the online application. Notify the Office of Graduate Studies if there are any discrepancies in your name. If your name does not match exactly, there will be a delay in matching your test scores to your application data. For questions regarding score expectations, please contact the appropriate unit directly.
Please note: In cases where a standardized test is not a program requirement, submission of test scores is optional. If received, they will be linked to your application file and reviewed at the discretion of the review committee.

International transcripts require an additional evaluation. This review is completed by an internal evaluator and requires no action by you, unless you are contacted directly requesting additional information. Third-party evaluations provided by a credential service, for example, Educational Credentials Evaluators (ECE) or World Education Services (WES) are not accepted. The only exception are Teaching (MAT) applicants who may also be required to submit ECE Course-by-Course Evaluations to aid in developing a plan of study that appropriately meets the requirements of a content major and (if chosen) a content minor.
Each degree from an international institution is individually assessed based upon the characteristics of the national system of education, the type of institution, the accreditation/recognition, the level of student, and number of years of postsecondary study. A U.S.-equivalent cumulative GPA will be calculated as part of this process and provided to the review committee.
This review is generally completed once all required materials have been received. If additional documentation is required in order to complete the review, you will be contacted directly. This review must be completed internally before the admission review committee will receive your file for admission review.
Most evaluations are completed in 4-6 weeks of being added to this queue. The timing for completion of your review is dependent on a few factors including, but not limited to:
- Evaluator familiarity with your institution
- Volume of transcripts ready for international transcript evaluation
- Timing of receipt of required materials (ex. official transcripts, marksheets, English language proficiency)
- Validation of credentials with institution officials, if required
Change in Start Term Needed?
If a change in start term is needed, a deferral request must be sent to the Office of Graduate Studies via the Graduate Admissions Deferral Request Form. It is recommended that the request be received by the advisory deadline for the new requested term of entry.
Applications are normally valid for one academic year from your initial term of application. We understand the coronavirus outbreak has resulted in a change of plans for many students. We are currently considering deferral requests beyond one year for Master's level students. Doctoral student deferral requests are always reviewed on a case by case basis by the program.
All documents previously submitted will be transferred to the new term along with your admission if you are eligible for a deferral. If you choose to attend another university in the meantime, your application will require a second review by the Faculty Review Committee with official transcripts from that institution.
Processing of deferral requests is completed in order of receipt, with immediate upcoming deadlines prioritized.
If you are in need of a student visa, a new I-20 will need to be issued for the term you select. Additional financial documentation may be required if materials on file are older than one year.
Financial Support and Student Visas
Please note that admitted international students in need of an F or J student visa must submit certification of financial resources adequate to provide for all expenses while attending. The Financial Affidavit and Bank Certification forms are not needed for your admissions application to be reviewed. However, if received and you are admitted, our office will forward these on to the Office of International Affairs (OIA).
An extended 24 month Optional Practical Training (OPT) is available for STEM-designated programs.
