What is Orientation and is it mandatory?
Orientation is a one-day program focused on acclimating incoming students (freshmen and transfer) to the policies, procedures, and services available to them at the University of Michigan-Dearborn.
Orientation is mandatory and the various sessions run from late May though August for students admitted in the Fall semester.
Freshman Orientation sessions are a full-day while Transfer Orientation sessions are half-days.
Students admitted for a winter semester will attend Winter Orientation, held in October, November, and December.
Students admitted for a summer term will attend Summer Orientation in April.
What should I bring with me to Orientation?
AP exam results (if you have them).
Wear comfortable shoes and anything weather appropriate (ex. an umbrella) as you will be touring campus.
Will I meet with someone from Financial Aid?
Yes, there will be a Financial Aid representative available on your orientation date.
Will I be charged for attending Orientation?
The New Student Fee of $75 is charged to all new incoming degree-seeking students at the time of registration of courses. The fee will be automatically posted to the student's account. This fee covers operational expenses required to deliver high-quality orientation programming and includes the administration of placement exams.
The New Student Fee is refundable only when a student withdraws from his/her first semester by dropping all classes on or before the last day to withdraw from all courses with no penalty.
Where can I find resources for students with disabilities?
If you have a disability that you would like to make us aware of, please contact Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) at 313-593-5430. Every effort will be made to accommodate your needs.
Will I take placement and/or qualifying tests at Orientation?
Plan to take your placement exams at least two to three weeks before attending your orientation session. This will ensure that you will receive your placement exam results in time for your academic advising session.
For more information, please visit the Placement Exams webpage or call the Office of Admissions and Orientation at 313-593-5100. You will begin to receive the information in late February if you have already been admitted for the Fall semester.
