We are changing the face and practice of leadership in our communities by cultivating and retaining homegrown leaders.
The 10-month Apprenticeship Program is the signature program of Public Allies. Founded in Washington, D.C. in 1992, the Apprenticeship Program now operates in 24 sites nationwide. The Public Allies Metro Detroit AmeriCorps program started in fall 2013. The AmeriCorps members (Allies) serve at a nonprofit placement site 4 days a week and meet every Friday for leadership development training. By the end of their service, Allies will complete 1700 total hours, with 320 hours of in-depth leadership development training.
The 5-month Leadership Academy launched in winter of 2016. It is a unique response to meet the needs in the Metropolitan Detroit area. The AmeriCorps members in the Leadership Academy program (Scholars) serve for 5 months. They are placed full time in teams of 4 at a local nonprofit organization to work on a community project. By the end of their service, they will serve 900 hours and receive 180 hours of leadership development training.
In their service placements, Allies and Scholars complete capacity building work. Their goal is to increase effectiveness, efficiency, and scale and reach of their nonprofit organization.
