Message from the Chair

Welcome to the Department of Social Sciences!

In Social Sciences we focus on the scientific investigation of society--its people, institutions, and systems.  We do this through the lenses of --

We also host interdisciplinary programs in Urban and Regional StudiesSocial Studies, and for graduate study, our Masters of Public Administration and Policy.  The department offers day and evening classes; on-line, blended, and traditional courses; and many opportunities for experiential learning including History and Economic internships, Public Affairs and Ottawa Internship programs, and several academic service learning courses.

The full-time faculty are dedicated teachers and active researchers, having published numerous books and articles in their fields.  Our varied approaches to scholarship offer students a range of experiences and expertise that run the gamut from U.S. to international topics and qualitative to quantitative methods.  Our adjunct faculty bring rich and varied experiences to their classrooms, with many of them working as professionals in the fields about which they teach.

The Social Sciences Department attracts talented students who not only draw academic honors, but also contribute greatly to the life of the university, produce quality research, and go on to careers in everything from law and government, to the business world, to the classroom.  Many of our undergraduate students go on to attend graduate school.

With hundreds of courses offered annually, and a dedicated, committed, and engaged faculty, we are confident that the Department of Social Sciences offers something for everyone.  We invite you to explore further what we have to offer and would welcome the opportunity to answer any questions that you might have.
