MSES Program

Qualified international students from China University of Geosciences (CUG, Wuhan), Wuhan University of Technology (WUT, Wuhan), and Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST, Wuhan) are encouraged to apply.

Selection & Recommendation

• Students selected and recommended by CUG, WUT, or HUST to apply to UM-Dearborn-CASL must complete the application form for international graduate admission, and UM-Dearborn-CASL reserves the right of final approval on the admission of any student.
• The application fee for CUG, WUT, and HUST students applying to the Collaborative Education Programs will be waived.

Admission Requirements

Grades & Pre-Requisite Courses

• Students must have maintained above-average grades (Grade Point Average [GPA] equal to or higher than 3.1 or its equivalent) in their undergraduate studies at CUG, WUT, or HUST.
• Students applying to the MSES Program must have completed the prerequisite courses required for admission to the MSES Program at CUG, WUT, or HUST. These courses include:
  • a field course in either biology or geology
  • 1 course in biology
  • 1 course in geology
  • 1 course in physics
  • 1 course in statistics
  • 2 courses in calculus
  • 3 courses in chemistry

English Language Proficiency

A student's English language proficiency for admission to the Visiting Program at UM-Dearborn-CASL should be:

• 84 on the Internet-based TOEFL

• 6.5 on the IELTS
• 76 on the MELAB

Applications

How to Apply

CUG, WUT, and HUST applicants must:

• Follow all application instructions for international graduate admission. Note that application fee for CUG, WUT, and HUST applicants is waived.

• Submit an Affidavit of Financial Support for International Students with supporting documentation. Recommendation for admission cannot be certified without this information.
• Submit official transcripts from all universities attended, together with an official English translation, from each undergraduate and postgraduate institution attended. 
• Meet the minimum standards of the English proficiency requirement by taking either the TOEFL, IELTS, or MELAB and submitting the score. 

Application Deadlines

Admission is granted on a rolling basis. This means we will continue to review applications received if there is space available. Advisory deadline guidelines by term are provided below. Applications received after the posted deadlines are accepted only if space is available.

General Requirements

Registration

Admitted students must register as full-time students (8 credit hours per semester for graduate students) at UM-Dearborn-CASL in a course of study approved by the appropriate UM-Dearborn-CASL academic program. 

Visa Requirements

• Students hosted by UM-Dearborn-CASL will be issued the necessary immigration documents by UM-Dearborn-CASL to obtain the appropriate visa. See Obtaining Visa
• Students shall be responsible for complying with all visa/immigration requirements, laws, and regulations of the United States of America, including obtaining and maintaining the appropriate visas and permits during the entire term of their Collaborative Education Program at UM-Dearborn-CASL.

Tuition & Fees

Students admitted to the Collaborative Education Program at UM-Dearborn-CASL will be assessed tuition each term as outlined in the tuition schedule.

UM-Dearborn-CASL may award merit-based scholarships to admitted students in the Collaborative Education Programs. Any provided scholarship will be applied for an amount equivalent to the difference between the non-resident tuition rate and 140% of the resident (State of Michigan) tuition rate.

Medical Insurance

Students who enter the USA on immigration documents issued by UM-Dearborn will be required to have health insurance that meets the specific standards described here or to purchase the University of Michigan's health insurance plan for international students and scholars.

• Students will be required to provide proof to UM-Dearborn-CASL that their insurance will cover the cost of health care during the period of participation in a collaborative Education Program.

• If necessary, the Office of International Affairs will assist in obtaining appropriate insurance
• There is also a Tuberculosis (TB) screening requirement for international students

Local Expenses

Each student will be responsible for his/her own local expenses, including immigration costs, travel between China and the USA, travel with the USA, room and board, accommodations, meals, textbooks, course materials, and other expenses in connection with their studies in a Collaborative Education Program at UM-Dearborn-CASL.

• The Office of International Affairs Housing Referral Services will assist students in obtaining housing accommodations to the extent feasible. 

Rules & Regulations

All students must comply with the laws of the State of Michigan and the USA, as well as the rules and regulations of UM-Dearborn. Any breach of UM-Dearborn rules and regulations will be dealt with in accordance with the established policies and procedures of UM-Dearborn. CUG/WUT/HUST will be notified of the violation and the UM-Dearborn disciplinary decision.
