- Name: Belinda Soliz
- Position: Administrative Specialist, Department of Social Sciences
- Years at UM-Dearborn: 20 years
What does a typical workday look like for you?
After I have my morning coffee while sifting through emails, I plunge into whatever the urgent fires are of the day! No two days are the same in my job. There may be days dedicated to reconciling, some days dedicated HR related tasks, deadlines that need to be met with schedules, LEO contracts, meeting agendas and the actual meetings and any other requests that may come from my department chair or other offices on campus. In between all of this, I try to be of any assistance that I can to our faculty – which may include helping with copier jams! There is so much variety in this job, and like I said before, no two days are the same.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Working with our faculty and my other colleagues! I have learned so much from them and I treasure my time and interactions with them. Over the 20 years that I have been on this campus, I have had the privilege to meet so many fascinating people and have developed friendships that I will forever cherish.
What was your first job?
I was a proof operator at Trenton State Bank. I actually enjoyed that job because I had the opportunity to meet others on runs that I had to make to pick up their transactions that needed to be processed.
What do you do to relax?
Listen to music, read and watch movies. And, sometimes, going for a ‘scenic ride’ on my Peloton!
If you could have any one skill or talent that you don’t already have, what would it be?
To sing and dance! I’ve tried dance lessons, but I just don’t have the moves!
What’s the proudest moment of your life?
I have many but two stand out: My oldest daughter, Stephanie, graduating from UM-Ann Arbor and my youngest daughter, Christina, graduating from UM-Dearborn. They continue to amaze me!
If we were to create a UM-Dearborn playlist, what song would you want to include?
Livin’ On a Prayer – Bon Jovi
What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I have a fear of swimming! I love being in the water as long as it is not over my head, but I can’t swim!
What’s one thing you wish you had known when you were a teenager?
To be true to myself and be more independent, speak up, have fun and live!
