- Name: Kyle Sutherland
- Position: Assistant Director of CASL Advising and Student Success
- Years at UM-Dearborn: Almost three years.
What does a typical workday look like for you?
Every day is different, which is refreshing. During summer, I am meeting with a lot of students that are planning on graduating at the end of Fall 2021 or Winter 2022, and they want to check in to make sure they are on track. I’m also meeting with a lot of new transfer students, and new FTIAC students for orientation. When we return to working on campus, I will resume supervising the student workers that provide great support to our office.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy meeting with students and helping them get to graduation. I enjoy problem solving, so when I can help a student solve a tricky situation, it’s very satisfying. I also really enjoy the people that I work with. The CASL Advising team makes it fun to come to work.
What was your first job?
My first W2 producing job was at Bittersweet Farms when I was probably 14. I had been shoveling snow and doing other odd jobs for people for a few years before that. I started at the farm mowing grass, which was usually 2-3 days a week, but with as much grass as there was, it would often turn into 4-5 days a week. It seemed never ending at times. The farm included growing cash crops, but also boarding and breeding horses. One day someone said something like, ‘when you’re done, you can fill these buckets with water and go put one in each stall’, and then it was a quick transition from lawn boy to farm hand. I worked there for about 3 years bailing hay and straw, mucking stalls, feeding horses, medicating horses, putting horses out to pasture….and then bringing horses back in from pasture, and of course, still mowing grass. The work was hard, and it needed to be done in the rain, snow, or summer sun, but I am happy to have had the experience.
What do you do to relax?
I enjoy hanging out with my family, which usually involves a board or card game, video games, or a movie. Lately I’ve been putting together LEGO sets that I bought at the thrift store.
If you could have any one skill or talent that you don’t already have, what would it be?
I would love to speak at least one other language, but I’d settle for sleeping for nine hours straight.
What’s the proudest moment of your life?
When my son was born. He continues to make me proud every day.
If we were to create a UM-Dearborn playlist, what song would you want to include?
Lovely Day - Bill Withers. Guaranteed to put you in a good mood.
What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I don’t like coffee. Blech.
What’s one thing you wish you had known when you were a teenager?
How to dance.
