Enjoy the following Q&A with Rick Morrone, Instructional Learning Associate in CASL's Language, Culture, and Communication Department.

  • Name: Rick E. Morrone
  • Position: Instructional Learning Associate
  • Years at UM-Dearborn: 2.5 working, graduated from here in 2011

What does a typical workday look like for you? I get to work with students on a daily basis on their needs for their video production projects - From script writing, filming, editing, and seeking overall inspiration. I assist the department in video production needs as well.

What do you enjoy most about your job? I always say the best part of the job is seeing the students get those little “light bulb” moments when they learn a new technique and apply it to their work. It’s really enjoyable and rewarding to help them learn something they’ve never tried and then see it come to fruition in their projects.

What was your first job? Scooping ice cream at a local Dairy Queen ripoff - “Dairy Dream”. It was there that my love for ice cream really blossomed, because during down time I could get creative and make my own flurries and sundaes with a bunch of different ingredients. Cherry Cheesecake Oreo flurry? You got it.

What do you do to relax? I like to take my dog for walks, which although it’s a physical activity, it is very relaxing to me. Then, after a long walk, I play music - Which I do a lot of as a bassist, drummer and producer.

If you could have any one skill or talent that you don’t already have, what would it be? Being a master at the piano. I am a novice, and I feel like it’s the one instrument that I wish I had started earlier in my life. To pull up to any random piano and just play whatever I want would be so cool. Also, human flight. I wish I could fly. Who doesn’t?

What’s the proudest moment of your life? The proudest moment of my life was when I was playing Dalley in the Alley in Detroit to a few thousand people with my band. The fact that people really enjoyed our original music, dance and sang along - That made me really proud because of how hard we worked. Easily an overall top 5 moment in my lifetime.

If we were to create a UM-Dearborn playlist, what song would you want to include? It Gets Funkier - Vulfpeck (a band of UM-Ann Arbor music students I knew in college that have risen to international fame in the past decade)

What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you? I really like to golf, even though my golf game is a work-in-progress.

What’s one thing you wish you had known when you were a teenager? Don’t try to rush everything in life - The universe has a way of working itself out, and everything will happen the way it is meant to be. Also, be sure to bet your life savings that the Pistons will beat the Shaq & Kobe Lakers in 5 games for the NBA Championship in 2004.
