Message from the Chair

Welcome from Dr. Qiang Zhu

I welcome you to the web presence of the Department of Computer and Information Science (CIS) at the University of Michigan - Dearborn.

To support the mission of the College of Engineering and Computer Science "to be the leader in providing quality undergraduate and graduate programs in an environment integrated with practice, research, and continuing professional education, in close partnership with the industrial community", our departmental mission is to provide an outstanding education in the various facets of Computer and Information Science. Through our multiple degree programs, we provide students with the knowledge and tools for a successful career in CIS. Our faculty, graduates of some of the best schools in U.S. and overseas, are active in education and research in various areas, and seek to impart their knowledge and experience to their students. Our professional advisory board, consisting of senior computing technologists and executives from world's leading companies such as eBay, Google, IBM, GE, Ford and GM, provides timely input and advice on our education programs, research agendas, and professional/community service endeavors. We strive to be one of the highly-reputed computer and information science departments in the country.

Our department is one of four departments in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. Our 20 full-time tenured/tenure-track faculty members conduct research in the areas of artificial intelligence and machine learning, computer and networking systems, computer graphics and geometric modeling, cybersecurity, data science/management, game design, and software engineering. Their research work has been sponsored by a variety of highly competitive funding sources including NSF, NIH, NHTSA, DOS, IBM, Ford, Chrysler, Microsoft, and Amazon among others. They publish in the very top venues in their fields. They are very active in research communities by serving on editorial boards for highly reputable journals and program/organizing committees for leading international conferences.

For undergraduate studies, we offer a BS in Computer and Information Science (BS-CIS), a BS in Software Engineering (BS-SWE), a BS in Data Science (BS-DS), and a BS in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance (BS-CIA). In addition, we offer a dual BS in CIS & DS, a dual BS in CIS & CIA, a concurrent BS in CIS Mathematics, and a minor in CIS. For graduate studies, we offer a PhD in Computer and Information Science (PhD-CIS), an MS in Computer and Information Science (MS-CIS), an MS in Data Science (MS-DS), an MS in Software Engineering (MS-SWE), and an MS in Cybersecurity and Information Assurance (MS-CIA).
