Professor Andrian Marcus from The University of Texas at Dallas visited the CIS department and gave a distinguished research seminar on "Using Text Retrieval in Software Engineering The Story of a Research Idea". One of the main challenges faced by researchers, especially early in their careers, is identifying research problems and solutions that will lead to a fruitful, long-term research agenda and produce results with lasting impact on the field. Professor Marcus presented his personal journey that started with a simple research idea and led to a fifteen year research agenda, which generated eight doctoral dissertations and more than 100 publications, including best papers and most influential papers.  The research focuses on the use of text retrieval and text analysis techniques for supporting software engineering tasks, such as: feature and bug localization in source code, traceability link recovery, documentation generation, etc.
