Dr. El-Gazali Talbi, Professor at the University of Lille and the head of the optimization group of the Computer Science laboratory (CRISTAL), visited CIS and gave a distinguished seminar on machine learning and metaheuristics.

In the presentation, Dr. Talbi discussed the synergy between machine learning and metaheuristics. He showed how machine learning can help in designing efficient metaheurisitics by guiding the development of the different components of metaheuristics such as the objective function, search operators, initial solutions. The parameter tuning and the problem models were also discussed. He then showed how metaheuristics can be used to solve machine learning problems. Some examples of clustering, classification, feature selection, and association rules are given. Finally, he focused on discussing the hyper-parameters optimization of machine learning models.
