Dr. Yuanfang Cai, Associate Professor in Computer Science at Drexel University, visited CIS to discuss research with faculty and students in the SBSE Research Lab and gave a CIS distinguished seminar on "Software Architecture Analysis: Theory and Practice". In this talk, Dr. Cai introduced her new architecture model and the associated analysis techniques, based on the Design Rule Theory. She modeled the architecture of a software system as multiple overlapping Design Spaces, reflecting the fact that any complex software system must contain multiple aspects, features, patterns, etc. It is shown that this model provides new ways to analyze software quality. In particular, she introduced a new metric called the Decoupling Level (DL), architecture smell detection techniques, architecture hotspot analysis, and architectural debt quantification. The implication of this study is that the maintenance quality of a large, complex software project cannot be fundamentally improved without first fixing its architectural problems.
