Prof. DeLean Tolbert was recognized last month at DAPCEP’s 6th Annual Real McCoy Awards.

The College of Engineering and Computer Science (CECS) is proud to share that Prof. DeLean Tolbert was honored with the DAPCEP (Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program) Real McCoy Award for Outstanding Alumni of the Year.  The award was presented last month at DAPCEP’s 6th Annual Real McCoy Awards at the DTE Energy Corporate Headquarters in Detroit.

DeLean Tolbert is an assistant professor in the department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering. She joined the college as a faculty member in September 2017 but Prof. Tolbert first got involved with DAPCEP while she was a student at UM-Dearborn working toward her B.S. in Electrical Engineering. She would later volunteer with DAPCEP as a teaching consultant, instructor, and a research intern.

DAPCEP’s mission is to “ increase the number of historically underrepresented youth who are motivated and academically prepared to pursue degrees and careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM).”

Since 1991, CECS has hosted students from the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program on campus for academic enrichment opportunities. This Fall, we are engaging middle school students in the engineering design process through our Integrated Engineering Design & Production class while area  high school students are focusing on the development and quality of software in Future Software Engineers: Creating and Designing Software & Tools.  These five week courses culminate with a showcase where all of the metro-area DAPCEP participants come together to highlight and demonstrate their course projects.  The Fall 2017 showcase is scheduled for November 11 at Second Ebenezer Church in Detroit. CECS is proud to support the work of DAPCEP in inspiring the next generation of STEM professionals!
