The Master of Arts in Education provides many opportunities for educators to expand their teaching skills and knowledge.
The Master of Arts in Education program is designed for working educators, enabling them to strengthen their knowledge, subject specialization and professional outlook through a University of Michigan degree.
The M.A. in Education is a 30-credit hour program with courses offered in the evening and online. The M.A. in Education offers the opportunity to pursue an additional endorsement in addition to earning a graduate-level degree. Students could earn a master's degree with or without endorsement. A valid Michigan Teaching Certificate is only required if students are seeking an endorsement as part of their program.
There are two concentrations within the M.A. in Education program that can be completed fully online. The M.A. in Education with TESOL and the M.A. in Education without Additional Endorsement can both be completed online.
This program prepares educators for the renewal of a Standard Certificate or the upgrade to a Professional Education Certificate.
Graduates of the Master of Arts in Education (M.A. Ed.) degree program will gain:
- Knowledge of established research and best practices in their specific disciplines (early childhood, early childhood inclusion, ESL, reading, technology, mathematics, mathematics leadership, the middle grades and public administration or liberal arts content)
- Strategies to enable them to be effective leaders within their respective disciplines at the classroom, school and/or district level
- Skills to enable them to continue to develop their knowledge of research and best practices that lead to effective instructional strategies for all student achievement
Students must submit the following items with their application.
The GRE is not required for admission to this program. The Office of International Affairs lists additional admission requirements for international students.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
- Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
- 3.0 GPA or higher on submitted transcripts
- Three professional letters of recommendation
- Personal statement
- Valid state of Michigan teaching certificate if seeking an additional endorsement

Mathematics Education Enhancement and Leadership
The M.A. in Education with a specialty in Mathematics Education Enhancement and Leadership (MEEL) is designed for teachers at elementary, middle or high school levels who hold a mathematics endorsement (EX from the state of Michigan), who are interested in becoming more knowledgeable in the teaching and learning of mathematics across all levels K-12, and who may in the future seek mathematics education leadership roles in schools or school districts. Because teaching and leadership are human relations activities, this program supports professionals in building relationships, learning together, deepening mathematics understanding, solving pedagogical problems, and ultimately improving teaching practice and student learning.
The program is practice-based, which means that readings, course activities and assignments are designed to be highly relevant to the daily work of mathematics teaching. It is founded on the Principles and Standards for Teaching Mathematics of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
The program is 30-credit hours (10 3-hour courses; no thesis) and provides stimulating, collegial, research- and practice-based learning, including mathematics content and methods.
Courses are offered to suit teacher-centered schedules including summers, evenings and online. Small classes with caring, well-qualified faculty provide challenging and supportive learning environments.
Certified elementary teachers who do not have but would like an EX endorsement may be interested in the K-8 Mathematics Endorsement.
