The Master of Science in Science Education challenges science teachers to explore new ways to reach their students.
Science Education is an exciting field of study in which teachers extend their science content knowledge as well as their pedagogical knowledge to help enrich their own teaching and students’ learning. In our 30-credit hour graduate-level program, teachers have many opportunities to engage in hands-on inquiry-based science investigations, to participate in field trips, to solve problems in their own classrooms using action research, and to develop as leaders within their own schools.
The program is designed for teaching professionals who possess either an elementary or secondary teaching certificate with a science endorsement. The MSSE courses are taught by faculty in both CEHHS and CASL who participate in the Inquiry Institute. To accommodate the different science content background of teachers, this degree program has two tracks: one for K-8 teachers with 24 or fewer credits in science (Track I) and one for 6-12 teachers with B.S. or B.A. degrees in a science discipline (Track II). Courses are primarily offered during the late afternoon/evening and in the summer to accommodate the working professional.
- Students will take on leadership roles as professional teachers (such as grant writing, joining professional organizations, submitting conference presentations)
- Students will gain new science content knowledge
- Students will locate, use, and conduct educational research to improve teaching practices
- Students will gain knowledge, strategies and skills to improve student learning
Students must submit the following items with their application. The GRE is not required for admission to this program. The Office of International Affairs lists additional admission requirements for international students.
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution
- Official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended
- 3.0 GPA or higher on submitted transcripts
- Three professional letters of recommendation
- Personal statement
- Valid state of Michigan teaching certificate if seeking a science endorsement
Before exiting from the M.S. in Science Education (MSSE), you need to complete three steps:
Prior to your last semester in the program, contact the program director with your UMID# requesting an Exit Audit. The audit verifies your pending completion of all course requirements and is required for graduation.
The purpose of this essay is to assist the College of Education, Health, and Human Services with the evaluation of the master’s degree program and to serve as a guide for program development. The Exit Essay is a requirement for completion of the program. Submit the exit form.
