Elementary Education (Grade Band)
Prepares you to teach in a self-contained classroom within the grade band(s) selected.
The B.A. in Elementary Education provides students with the content knowledge needed to instruct all subjects (Language Arts, Science, Math and Social Studies) to children in elementary grades. The major has a set of core requirements that students in all concentrations are required to take. These requirements include content, foundational, and methodological coursework.
Students pursuing the major in Elementary Education will be required to take two Apprenticeship courses and a semester long internship. Field experience is an integral component of teacher preparation.
What will I Learn?
Candidates for certification in Elementary Education will be:
- Knowledgeable in content relevant to their chosen grade band.
- Capable of translating pedagogical knowledge into practice.
- Capable of integrating educational technology to support learning.
Degree Requirements
- Minimum 2.75 GPA overall and in major
- Minimum 129 credit hours
- Completion of general education, major, and upper level credit requirements
Concentration Areas
Students in the Elementary Education major are required to select a minimum of 2 concentrations from the options below.
At least one of the two concentrations must be a grade band (PK-3 or 3-6).
This concentration prepares students to teach in a self-contained classroom teaching all subjects in Pre-K to 3rd grade. Required courses have a special focus on early literacy, relationship development, and strategies for teaching children in Pre-K to 3rd grade.
Possible concentration combinations include: 3rd to 6th Grade, English as a Second Language, or Learning Disabilities.
This concentration prepares students to teach in a self-contained classroom teaching all subjects in 3rd-6th grade. Required courses have a special focus on classroom management strategies, intercultural education, and content relevant to children in upper elementary grades.
Possible concentration combinations include: Pre-K to 3rd Grade, English as a Second Language, or Learning Disabilities.
This concentration prepares students to provide additional support to children who have a native language other than English. Required courses focus on literacy assessment for English language learners, understanding of linguistics, and English grammar.
Possible concentration combinations include: Pre-K to 3rd Grade OR 3rd to 6th Grade.
This concentration prepares students to teach Kindergarten through 12th grade in a resource room providing supportive instruction for children who have an Individual Education Plan (IEP). Required courses focus on special education assessment, use of assistive technology, and strategies for instructing students with learning disabilities. This concentration also requires a second semester of student teaching in an elementary and secondary setting.
Possible concentration combinations include: Pre-K to 3rd Grade OR 3rd to 6th Grade.
