Below are business ideas submitted for the 2020 and 2022 UM-Dearborn Business Idea Pitch Competitions (previously known as the Elliott Initiative.)

2022 Submissions
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
My idea is to create an association which deals with scouting for jobs and assigning them to students. Students who desire jobs will undergo a short quiz that fits them rightly into different jobs on or off-campus. Students will also have the option of scouting for jobs themselves but must submit their choice to SACD for review before allowed to work.
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
My target customers are the Regents of The University of Michigan and even possibly, the US Government.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
I believe my biggest competitor will be "Indeed"
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
SACD is solely dedicated to giving students an opportunity to make college life less tough. Also, it considers international students who find it hard to get jobs on campus just to earn enough to support themselves through college. SACD is something new. "SACD. Your JP(job placement), our priority"
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
Access to healthy food and mobility issues both have one thing in common and that is lack of funds. Research has shown, a lot of students have been struggling with money since the COVID began. What we need now is to create a new system dedicated to the wellness and growth of all students in US.
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
My idea is speed dating on the road. People will go at many lengths to find love. Finding people outside of your usual crowd can be difficult, so where are you around the most people that come from different walks of life? The road. You can talk while in the car without physical distractions and if you feel a connection, take the exit and meet up at the coffee shop!
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
The target customer of the service will be geared more towards gen z/millenials since they are typically more comfortable with advanced technology. Most people at this stage in their life are also more willing to go outside of their comfort zone in this approach of finding the one.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
The biggest competitors would be dating apps. The goal is the same- making matches. There are dating apps such as Tinder, Bumble, Hinge, CoffeeMeetsBagel, and plenty more. The function of finding love is different though.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
There is a different approach that no other competitor has. This is someone who is around you and can make sparks fly right then. If you feel a connection and they want to meet-great! If not, you don't have to waste time getting emotionally invested in someone and never have to see them again.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
There is convenience in finding love with your busy life. It gets boring filling in that time from point a to point b. Going on a dating app or texting someone while driving is dangerous, but this is communicating with someone while driving safe. Things are moving faster than a typical dating app.
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
There is a lot of enterprise software that aims to improve productivity, namely Asana, Trello, ClickUp, etc. In additional, there has been a flood of self-help influencers who share productivity tips and recommend various tools from different sites. I want to create an all-encompassing productivity software for the consumer market. I plan to bring the product to scale using said influencers.
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
Students, the self-employed, or anyone who would like to make better use of their time and use a platform that contains all the software tools that they previously needed multiple websites to use the same functionality.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
In this space, none. The enterprise software players are too bloated, slow and confusing for the average consumer to use and have too much emphasis on team needs. Peak Productivity will target individual needs and keep everything nimble, fast and sleek.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
It is filling a need in the market that is currently met by a fragmented divide of enterprise providers. With an integrated solution, the data can be passed from all the different applications and can be beautifully visualized, providing greater insight than any existing tool out there at the moment
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
I think because there is a huge push on social media to make better use of one's time and people are turning to enterprise software in droves to meet their needs. However, since there is nobody in this space making an aggressive push in the consumer market, we will have an early mover's advantage.
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
Our App is a video game meets workout! Completing challenges help you level up. Challenges can be found at home and within your community. Group workouts help get you more points. Points can be obtained not just through the workouts, but through step counting and healthy food purchases. Community businesses can participate by offering gift cards for those seeking physical rewards.
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
Adults who need motivation to workout, adults who enjoy video games and competition, kids who enjoy video games, competition, and need physical activity.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
Outschool, Pokémon Go, Stravia
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
None of our competitors have all of our ideals within one app. Outschool offers physical movement classes, Pokémon Go is a movement game but only for hatching Pokémon in game, and Stravia simply records and shares your workout with friends. Our app encompasses all of these in one.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
Our idea will be success because competition and rewards are successful means of motivating people to workout. It can be difficult to know what to do or may lack the motivation to workout, however group activities and premade workouts are powerful motivational tools to help led a better lifestyle.
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
Grab N’ Go offers an online platform that sells customizable healthy snack subscription boxes for university students, providing them with easier access to healthy eating options on campus. Being students ourselves, we understand what it is like to balance a bustling academic, social, & work life with our health. Technology is easily accessible in our age, hence we decided for it to be online.
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
Our target customer are mostly university students who would like to eat healthier around their busy academic, social, and job schedules, without giving up delicious foods, by saving time and money. However, it can be anyone who is interested in eating healthy, but has a tight schedule.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
Our biggest competitors are companies like HelloFresh that sell pre-made meal kits, and the brands that provide snacks in vending machines on campuses.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
It ensures a painlessly easy access to snacks that can substitute a whole meal from their nutritional value and is offered in the form of an online platform that doesn’t take much time to order from. The customization option is a plus for the product, as it considers our customers' health needs.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
Our idea will be successful, because we are addressing our customers' pains such as lack of time, lack of access to healthy food options on university campuses, different dietary needs, and tight finances (especially for students), by translating them into gains and a product they will benefit from.
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
ActivMatch is an app that matches people with activities. Through a simple interface the user is presented with an activity that is happening near them and needs some extra people. They will see how many people are already there, where it is and how many more people are needed to get started. The user will then simply choose to participate by either swiping right to accept or left to decline.
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
Initially college students. Specifically students at UM-Dearborn. 1st level of expansion to include other UM campuses. 2nd level of expansion is to include other popular universities. 3rd tier is to include an invite only release for people outside of universities. Final is publicly available.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
Meetup, Discord, other apps that are specifically geared to a single activity meetup.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
The interface, how it works behind the scenes, and the tiered release approach.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
We've tested the market at university of michigan dearborn and found many people were excited about the idea. Some people even requested to be added to the beta testing.
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
Grilli Pasta is a more healthy alternative to normal pasta. It is packed with protein from a... non conventional source... Crickets! We use a blend of regular flour as well as cricket powder in order to increase the protein content as well as other vitamins and minerals. This may sound gross to some, but we find it to be a safe and inexpensive way to help improve the diets of many.
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
Low income individuals who are looking for an easy, inexpensive, and nutritious meal.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
Bugsolutely - Cricket Pasta
Cricket flours
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
Cricket pasta is not something you will typically find at your local supermarket. We hope to bring cricket pasta to the masses and extinguish the stigma behind eating crickets.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
Grilli Pasta is a unique idea that is tapping into a market that's practically undisturbed in the US. In other parts of the world such as Asia insects are eaten without hesitation. With access to inexpensive healthy food being a challenge for many in the west we believe that our idea can solve this
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
We want to create easily accessible vegetable store, which will provide healthy fresh vegetables, meat and poultry products to the customer living in metro cities, which are mostly dependent on frozen food and are merely depend on freshly available products. This idea will benefit both the customers and farmers as there will be less mediators in between.
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
We are mainly focused on customers from metro cities. As reason, farming is not possible in or around the metro cities as the land is mostly occupied by industries and due to that the cost of land will be too high. Secondly due to pollution, the food quality of crops will get hampered.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
We are seeing all major retail stores as our competitors includes Kroger, Walmart, Meijer, etc. As these stores mostly provide frozen foods, which is not completely healthy, but due to time and availability constraints people have to rely on these products.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
Our goal is to provide fresh food to customer & we will be having zero frozen food policy, which itself makes it unique idea. Farmers are getting very less price for their products, as many mediators involved, they buy products at very less price from farmers, overstock and then sell at high price.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
We are trying to connect fresh farm products directly to the customers, which will be benefit both the farmers and customers, as customers will get fresh food and farmers will get good pay, as mediators in between will reduced.
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
Ever been hungry and dreamt of eating something quick, tasty, yet healthy and wholesome?! Still searching? We have an easy solution. Refrigerated vending machines selling fresh fruits, placed at strategic locations in the university campus. An organic, locally grown selection of fruits either whole or cut & hygienically packed, would make a nutritious and satiating snack, any time of the day!!
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
Our target customers would include all the various members of our university, such as students, employees and even visitors who are hungry & health-conscious looking for a natural & affordable snack or a light meal. Additionally, this idea would be perfect for busy individuals who are in a hurry!
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
There are currently no competitors, offering the exact kind of service in the university. Nevertheless, our biggest competitors could be existing food vending machines on the university campus. The cafeterias in the university presently do not offer either whole or cut fresh fruits on their menu.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
Our idea is really different because it offers a quick yet healthy alternative over ready-to-eat, factory-made, instant snack options containing a lot of artificial colors, flavorings and preservatives. Organic fresh fruits would make a delicious and colorful snack, whilst being easy to buy and eat.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
While most factory-made snack products with artificial additives are not so very healthy and lead to a host of lifestyle diseases, pesticide-free, hygienically packed fresh fruits are highly nutritious, have no harmful side effects and can be eaten on the go. They would be easily accessed as well!
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
A Socket/extension with a built in light at the base to see into dark spaces when working with a socket wrench in tight areas, where a flash light cannot fit.
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
Mechanics, “DIYers”, similar
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
Husky, snap-on, Pittsburgh all make tools but this product would be one of one.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
It is yet to exist and it solves issues that many mechanics have, including myself.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
Allows people like me and others to easier use tools and work on projects.
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
My Idea is to run local private farms that use old farming methods for safer, sustainable, and heavy chemical fertilizers and pesticide free produce. Then sell the produce through a farmer app built specifically for customers to buy freshly picked veggies and fruits. A traditional food bazaar would be built near the farm for people to shop and live the cultural experience of shopping at bazaars.
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
My target customer is people who prefer healthy, sustainable, unpackaged and fresh grocery products without the expensive price tag behind organic labels. Its also for people who like to explore cultural methods in shopping which in this case is the bazaar method of selling daily harvested products.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
My biggest competitors are big franchises like Kroger, Aldi, Walmart, and Joe Randazzo's. As well as small local supermarkets and grocery stores.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
What makes my idea different is that it will provide cheaper access to actually healthy food. The U.S. food market makes eating healthy so expensive it's luxury-like. This farm mart will make real 100% natural food accessible for everyone!
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
My idea will be successful because it will provide great value to its customers with a smooth and less expensive method while making grocery shopping enjoyable for those who shop through the bazaars. It will also save those who buy through the app time while providing the best products out there.
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
My idea is an app that allows you to purchase fresh, homemade meals from others in your workplace or school and also sell meals too. Sellers simply upload pictures of the meals they're selling to the app. Buyers will see these pictures of meals and if they are interested in one they will click on it. From there, they are put in contact with the seller to negotiate a price and a delivery place.
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
The target customers are those who are tired of having processed, cafeteria food. It also targets those who are unable to or are too busy to make their own food. But above all, it is for people who are envious of those who come prepared with meals made with love and this app satisfies this desire.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
My biggest competitors are food delivery apps like Uber Eats and Doordash. This is because some of the restaurants they deliver for are healthy and these apps are willing to deliver to workplaces and schools.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
What's different is that since people are selling to others in their workplace/school, there will be no expensive delivery fees which are only going to be going up because of gas prices. In addition, meals from home have that special homemade touch that cannot come from a commercial kitchen.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
It will be successful because it is a way to make some extra money that requires little effort that anyone can do. For example, let's say a seller agrees to sell a sandwich that day at work. The only additional effort he does is to make an extra sandwich for lunch and meet the buyer at work.
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
Kitchen Made is the concept of a dynamic platform that allows grassroots chefs and culinary enthusiasts the opportunity to showcase their passion for healthy food and homemade flavor. With our industrial cloud kitchens, culinary artists forego the brick-and-mortar costs of their own restaurant, shipping food straight to your door.
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
Young professionals and college students away from home all suffer from the epidemic of affordable fast food, but Kitchen Made delivers home on a plate. On days when parents can’t find the time to cook, they can rest easy knowing they can still provide their children nutritious meals with no hassle.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
The pairing of food delivery services such as DoorDash, UberEats and Grubhub with traditional restaurants in addition to ready made meal and nutrition services.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
Culinary artists can now bypass the cost of brick-and-mortar restaurants. The lack of overhead costs relieves the curators and translates into affordable meals. Also, partnerships with local organic farms creates economies of scale to reduce costs when providing stocked cloud kitchens.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
No compromises will be made in the lives of customers who want affordable and authentic homecooked meals but don’t have the time. In today’s America, sharing culture through food gets lost between what is available and the scarcity of time. Kitchen Made solves these problems at home and on campus.
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)

Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
Grubhub
Shipt
Amazon Fresh
Whole Foods
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
It addresses the pains of a specific customer segment
Physically limited people experience more food insecurities as they are less likely to get employed. They can not afford healthy food because of low-income jobs.
Seniors suffering from chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, diabetes ...
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
Based on the value proposition we found a match. This app will minimize their pains linking people who are in need with people who are willing to donate, helping them feel more supported, more secure, happier, healthier, minimizing chronic diseases of seniors that come from a bad diet.
2020 Submissions
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
The concept our team is designing is a battery that is gear powered that allows for other devices to be charged. As the user manually pedals he would be allowing the gears on the bike to power a motor that will allow an electrical current to build and be outputted to multiple devices. The user can then use this generated power to elevate biking when going through slopes or rough terrain.
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
The target customer will be athletically fit people or people traveling long distances who are looking to power devices when they are low on charge while they are on the move. In addition, since this is a hybrid bike, it will also be for people who are not as confident against slopes or rough areas.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
Our biggest competitors are companies that have electric bikes and companies that produce portable battery packs.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
Our bike encompasses the idea of both an electrically boosted bike with the ability to charge other devices such as phones or any USB powered component. The user does not have to fumble around trying to find their potentially dead battery pack, when there would be one in front of them.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
The idea will be successful because it will allow the user to have power regardless of their location. This could be life-saving. The boost from the hybrid powered bike will allow for less power on subject and would mean that they would not be exhausted from elongated periods of riding on the bike
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
Taking advantage of the latest and lasting gaming craze, I plan on creating E-Lounge, a lounge gaming center. The all inclusive gaming center will combine the latest craze along with a lively and social environment. It would provide rental gaming rooms, public gaming booths, a lounge area, and live viewing parties for broadcasts of major events (sports, game tournaments, etc.)location:east Dearborn
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
People often visit gaming centers for different reasons, including looking to relieve some stress, spend time with friends and/or their kids, meet new people, or even boredom. Specifically we aim to market: Adults aged between 30 and 37 years, Middle and high school students College students tourist
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
It's no surprise that consumers would occasionally prefer to game in the comfort of their own home. However, most adults/preteens most likely would not own their own personal console. E-Lounge would also have the latest technology that most consumers wouldn't have the funds to purchase just yet.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
Although there are other gaming lounges located near east Dearborn, I had discovered that their interior and architectural set up lacks creativity and contemporary design that our target market desires. Regardless, the idea of a gaming lounge sets a new medium for local gamers like none other.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
E-Lounge will be successful because Dearborn is a thriving business district. Locals here love checking out new places. Once someone checks into E-Lounge, they'd never be able to forget the sight. The makeup would be completely unique. It would be a "dream" for gamers and maybe even some non-gamers.
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
My idea to create an application that matches individuals seeking employment in the contingent and services workforce with an employer. The app will utilize the swipe gesture, popular in dating apps, and geofencing. Job seekers and employers can swipe to find their ideal match based on a variety of preferences, including location, experience/certificate requirements, availability, ratings/comments
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
First, high school students that want to have their first job experience. Second, college students that are looking to make some extra money outside of school. Third, "newbies in the city" are the people that just moved into a new town and trying to look for a job that will pay for their expenses.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
My biggest competitor is Bumblebizz, which is an extension service created by the dating site company Bumble. It offers a casual environment for working professionals to connect and network with potential business partners and mentors. Also, LinkedIn.com offers a mega search covering various jobs.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
While many of my competitors are targeting the professional crowd, they are missing the first-time job seeker and the contingent worker crowd. Moreover, users on my app do not have to feel pressured to upload a resume, post inspirational articles, connect with people, and retype job applications.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
When the pandemic starts to recover, my app will fill the low skilled job market that the networking and traditional job sites can't reach. Local businesses can take advantage of my app to find replacements for high turnover positions. Young job seekers can use this app to get accredited experience.
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
As theatres, restaurants, parks, salons, etc. are opening up, public places are getting crowded putting everyone at risk of contracting COVID especially elderly and patients with comorbidities. 'Safreely' curates and ranks places based on their risk levels using location, peak hours, and contact tracing. You can select a safe option from the curated list or request home delivery of goods/services
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
Public places are accessed by everyone based on their needs and interests. Therefore, everyone under the sun is my likely customer. More people using the service will lead to higher accuracy in risk-ranking of the places and hence more Safety to All
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
There isn't any similar application that curates safe places in the COVID-era. However, Google and Apple have recently launched COVIDWISE app which does contact tracing, however it does not curates safe places or gives an option to request for delivery of goods/services
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
Safreely is unique because it gives real-time risk assessment for the place you want to visit. It also suggests alternatives to that place (restaurants, departmental stores, etc.) which are safer. If one is old or does not wish to leave home, they can request home delivery of food, grocery, etc.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
After months of isolation, people want to go out without risking safety and health. People have accepted to live alongside COVID & will continue to indulge & enjoy with Safety. Safreely solves this need. With growing users, the reinforcement cycle and network effect will set in, making it a success

What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
Inspire Lab is an outlet for kids to build and create their ideas to potentially sell through us as their partners. We make and sell starter kits, work with
high-schoolers, and host a competition. Kids who have innovative ideas will enter a contest/competition and the winners will be granted the opportunity to
work with Inspire Lab to make it happen.
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
The target customer would be high school kids who are passionate about STEM and want an outlet to explore their ideas and creations. They may use the starter kits to assist with their prototypes in the labs.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
The biggest competitors would be after-school STEM programs and organizations. (Side note: the document I uploaded is my current business plan called Tarakhovsky Laboratories. I am planning to rebrand/rename it to Inspire Lab. Nothing else will be changed.)
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
Many STEM programs and organizations focus mainly on one aspect of STEM such as engineering or robotics. Inspire Lab will have the option of students exploring computer science, physics, chemistry, engineering, and robotics.
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
My idea will be successful because there are many kids with brilliant ideas and limited access to resources to explore them. Inspire Lab offers the perfect outlet for students to make their ideas a reality and even be able to profit off of them.
What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
Most drugstores are small, which limits capacity, causing long lines and wait times. With Mobile Drugstore, drugstore items, including OTC medications, household products, basic groceries, and cosmetics can circle through neighborhoods regularly (3-4 times a week) on a truck. Consumers will be able to view schedules and inventory on an app and request the truck to stop at their home.
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
The target customer includes busy individuals who do not have time to stop in wait lines outside stores. Additionally, this idea is perfect for at-risk individuals who are trying to refrain from places where community spread is possible. The outdoor nature of this idea reduces the risk and exposure.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
There are many grocery delivery and pickup options (e.g., Instacart, Amazon Fresh, Shipt, Walmart Grocery, etc.), but they do not target the variety present at drugstores. In addition, these options do not allow for spontaneous shopping. Most of these apps require meticulous planning.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
Mobile Drugstore operates in a regular manner, allowing consumers to be spontaneous in their shopping habits. It takes the stress out of shopping, and leaves wiggle room in case someone forgets to purchase an item (they can always grab it in a couple days when the truck comes again).
Why will your idea be successful? (max 300 characters)
It will be marketed as a quick and easy way to obtain necessities and comfort items. Drugstore products are an important component of a healthy lifestyle, which is the aim of many in the midst of a pandemic. With the products being at your doorstep regularly, consumers will purchase more often.

What is your idea? (max 400 characters)
A company that reaches out to businesses and helps them accept different cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin at their locations. The blockchain would handle the transactions and we handle payment to the business owner if they only wanted to receive the cash instead of Bitcoin. This would be great for consumers because it allows them to pay in their currency without being an inconvenience for the business
Who is your target customer? (max 300 characters)
A small business owner that is interested in accepting new forms of payment.
Who are your biggest competitors? (max 300 characters)
There are a very limited number of competitors that help businesses get on board with cryptocurrencies. The biggest challenge is time. Once more people understand cryptocurrencies and their uses they will be less difficult to use.
What makes your idea different? (max 300 characters)
This would help the average business owner understand and adopt a new wave of currency. This would not only create a network of places that accept cryptocurrencies, it would also increase the value of said currencies by making them more useful.
