In order to pursue the career choice that is best for you, it’s important to discover and understand your interests, personality, values, and skills.  Our goal at the Internship and Career Management Center (ICMC) is to connect you with the tools and resources available on campus to help you through the dynamic career development process.

Career Options

Some students know exactly what they want to do when they enter college. For others, it takes years and some exploration before they figure out what they want to do after college with their degree. And then there are those that pick a major but still don’t know what to do with it. Here are some of the possible career paths for each of our COB majors:

Scholarships

The University of Michigan-Dearborn has a long-standing commitment to making higher education affordable. In addition to participating in traditional business internships, some of our students may choose to have a direct impact on the local community through our Internship Scholarship Program (ISP) with nonprofit organizations. While most of our internships are paid, there may be a nonprofit agency that offers valuable experience to COB students. In exchange for this experience we may be able to offer a lump-sum scholarship, paid in a future semester, for this hands-on experience. We encourage our students to explore each of the following resources:

Career Counseling and Mentorship Opportunities

To be successful in any field, aspiring leaders require role models and guidance. With the 30 Minute Alumni Mentors for Students program you can receive hands-on knowledge of networking and professional engagement opportunities through face-to-face mentoring conversations from the Leaders and Best who have come before you. Launching September 23, 2016, students can join the Talent Gateway Online Community, get connected with a Talent Ambassador, interact with other students, staff, and alumni, and explore the resources available. 

  • College to Career Coaching Program

    Are you trying to decide on your major? Have you got it narrowed down to 2 or 3 possibilities and would like a hand in looking for possible career opportunities? Would you like to strengthen your business network? Do you have other career related questions that you need answers to? Our career coaches can help you to sort out these questions and more. 

    Our career coaches are recent alumni (~3-5 years) that have successfully navigated the job market to land their first career position. They have recently been in your shoes and can further assist you to successfully launch your career.

     Expectations of the program include:

    • Committing 4-5 hours a month to completing the assignments and activities associated with the program
    • Participate in the required and recommended activities
    • Personally document ongoing activities and accomplishments
    • Develop/Enhance your personal Career Acceleration Plan and produce a video resume
  • BA 300 - Career Planning & Development Class

    Our Career Planning and Development Class will take you deeper into your career search preparation by allowing you to develop a detailed Career Acceleration Plan as well as expose you to richer activities that will add value long after you leave UM-Dearborn. These activities will help you to further explore your passion, discover opportunities,and tell your story. This is done by:

    • Developing an entrepreneurial mindset and embracing the concepts in I Inc.
    • Survive, Adapt, and Flourish by developing long and short-term goals
    • Conducting a critical self-assessment and being open to feedback
    • Developing your Personal Brand
    • Developing your Personal Value Proposition
    • Identifying the underserved need in the market
    • Learning how to craft effective resumes and cover letters
    • Further develop and practice networking and interviewing skills
    • Making sure that you are effectively and professionally telling your story on social media
  • 30 Minute Alumni Mentors for Students

    UM-Dearborn students, get advice from the Leaders and the Best who have come before you by participating in the 30 Minute Mentor program. You can receive hands-on knowledge of networking and professional engagement opportunities through face-to-face mentoring conversations from UM-Dearborn alumni.

  • Talent Gateway / GradeCraft

    The Talent Gateway Online Community connects students with resources, experiences, and people designed to enhance their personal, academic, and career success. Once students join, they can engage with peers, staff, faculty, and alumni while exploring their passions, interests, and strengths. For those who want a more enriching Talent Gateway experience, students can be connected with a Talent Ambassador (a junior, senior, or graduate student peer mentor) or an Alumni Mentor for support in navigating the wealth of exceptional academic, experiential learning, and leadership opportunities available both on and off campus.

    Become a member of the Talent Gateway’s Online Community on Canvas to gain access to Grade Craft, a new approach to learning with a variety of resources which can support you in exploring and achieving your personal and professional goals. 

  • I Inc. Philosophy

    I Inc: Career Planning and Personal Entrepreneurship teaches students how to market themselves effectively in today's competitive professional environment. Students begin to truly understand their personal interests, develop a plan that enables them to market those interests, and then launch their careers.

    Students learn the critical distinction between searching for a job and developing a successful career strategy. They acquire the skills required to become entrepreneurs of their professional lives regardless of where or in what field they may choose to work.

COB Student Organizations

Pursue your passion and connect with other students by joining any of the Professional Student Organizations within the College of Business.  By joining a student organization you will learn about yourself, work closely with a team, develop leadership skills, and access networking opportunities.  Members of student organizations also have the chance to take on a leadership positions and participate in national honors competitions, all of which can give your resume an edge over the competition when applying for jobs post-graduation.

Study Abroad

Earn credit towards your degree while developing your academic, intercultural, professional, and personal skills and attitudes by participating in a Study Abroad Program. Students in the International Summer Program in Management​ (ISPM-Italy) study at the University of Padua, giving students a competitive edge in thinking about business with the influence of other cultures. Other study abroad opportunities are available in Asia, Europe, and North America through the Office of International Affairs.
