Five College of Business alumni recognized at Alumni Difference Makers Awards Ceremony

The recipients were honored for their contributions to their professional fields, communities and UM-Dearborn.

For 40 years, UM-Dearborn has honored outstanding alumni for their contributions to the University and community. These men and women are "difference makers" who have continued the University's legacy of leadership in their lives and careers. They are making a positive impact in their workplaces and communities, and serve as strong role models for a new generation of UM-Dearborn student leaders. Distinguished Alumnus of the Year

William Hatcher (‘76 M.M.) began his career working at a steel mill, a nuclear power plant, and for national retailers. In 1985, he entered the wine business as managing director for century-old French Burgundy producer Maison Joseph Drouhin. Hatcher went on to co-found the award-winning A to Z Wineworks in Oregon in 2002, which has become certified as a B Corporation and named Best for the World B Corporation five years in a row. A to Z Wineworks has been recognized by Food & Wine magazine and has been noted as one of the fastest growing wine brands in the United States. He is a loyal supporter of UM-Dearborn’s College of Business and has been a member of the College of Business Board of Advisors since 2014.

College of Business Alumnus of the Year

Kenneth Mac (‘85 B.S.A.) is a director within General Motors’ Customer Care and Aftersales division, leading the Protection business unit since 2014. Prior to GM, he held various executive management positions in service sector companies including Accenture consulting, Sedgwick administrators, Ally Financial-Insurance, and Michigan Medicine. At UM-Dearborn he served as a College of Business and Talent Gateway alumni mentor, educating students on networking skills, interview tips, and general soft skill demands within the workforce. Mac is a dedicated and engaged supporter of UM-Dearborn and recently joined the UM-Dearborn Alumni Society Board to enhance alumni engagement opportunities.

Alumni Service Award

Bryan Becker (‘69 B.B.A.) had a successful career as a partner at Ernst & Young, where he worked for 36 years, and later as a partner at The Hunter Group LLC, in addition to being involved in the community as a committee member and volunteer at several organizations. Becker has been a philanthropic leader and volunteer at UM-Dearborn and has served on the College of Business Board of Advisors since 1993. He created the EY/UM-Dearborn Homecoming, a unique gathering for UM-Dearborn alumni who were also Ernst & Young employees. Becker also planned his class’ 50 year reunion and helped establish the Richard E. Czarnecki Endowed Scholarship and the Richard E. Czarnecki Collegiate Professorship.

Alumni Business of the Year

Huda Beauty (Huda Kattan, ‘07 B.B.A. & Christopher Goncalo, ‘08 M.S.Fin.) Huda Beauty, a Dubai-based,International beauty company, has demonstrated a commitment to making the world a better place for all. Launched in 2013 by award-winning beauty blogger and UM-Dearborn alumna, Huda Kattan, Huda Beauty is now one of the world’s fastest-growing beauty brands. Starting with their first product of false eyelashes, Huda Beauty expanded the company’s empire to include makeup, fragrance, and skin care. Kattan and her husband, Chris Goncalo, also a UM-Dearborn alumnus, have grown the company to the number one beauty Instagram account in the world with over 47 million followers. The company has financially supported the NAACP, Doctors Without Borders, and freelance makeup artists whose work was affected by the world-wide pandemic.
