Join Chancellor Domenico Grasso and Professor Deborah Smith Pollard as UM-Dearborn welcomes our fourth Thought Leader, Kathleen Fitzpatrick, author of Generous Thinking: A Radical Approach to Saving the University, and Director of Digital Humanities and Professor at Michigan State University. Thought leaders will be invited to campus throughout the Strategic Planning process to discuss the state of higher education and other related topics. 

About the Speaker

Dr. Kathleen Fitzpatrick is Director of Digital Humanities and Professor of English at Michigan State University. Prior to assuming this role in 2017, she served as Associate Executive Director and Director of Scholarly Communication of the Modern Language Association. She is author of Generous Thinking: The University and the Public Good (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2019), as well as Planned Obsolescence:  Publishing, Technology, and the Future of the Academy (NYU Press, 2011) and The Anxiety of Obsolescence: The American Novel in the Age of Television (Vanderbilt University Press, 2006). She is director of MESH, a research and development unit at MSU focused on the future of scholarly communication, and project director of Humanities Commons, an open-access, open-source network serving more than 18,000 scholars and practitioners in the humanities. She serves on the editorial or advisory boards of numerous publications and projects including the Open Library of the Humanities, Luminos, the Open Annotation Collaboration, and thresholds. She is a member of the board of directors of the Council on Library and Information Resources and of the Educopia Institute, and she is Vice-President/President-Elect of the Association for Computers and the Humanities.
