The UM-Dearborn Honors Program 2018 Winter Colloquium: "Confronting Homer's Iliad" presented by Dr. Ruth Scodel, Collegiate Professor of Greek and Latin, University of Michigan.

Homer’s Iliad is the oldest work of Western literature. Written down in Greek around 750 BCE, this poem — over 15,000 lines long — is actually much older, going back to a time before writing even existed in Ancient Greece.  How can that be?  And how could an oral poem not only be so long but also so psychologically complex? Professor Scodel (Ph.D. Harvard, 1978), author of several books on Ancient Greek literature, will explain these and other fascinating issues that confront readers of this enduring classic of world literature.
