Celebration of Phillis Wheatley Via the Musical Suite "Ocean" Inbox

African & African American Studies (AAAS), Women’s & Gender Studies (WGST), English, the Center for Social Justice and Inclusion (CSJI), and the Office of Diversity and Inclusion (DEI) invite you to experience the musical suite "Ocean: The Life and Times of Phillis Wheatley" Wed., March 29, 2023, at 6 pm in the Mary Kochoff Auditorium, 1030 CB.

It was 250 years ago that Phillis Wheatley's book, Poems on Various Subjects Religious and Moral, was published, making her the first Black poet to have that experience in America.  Marion Hayden, Bassist and Kresge Artist Fellow, composed the musical suite "Ocean"that  spotlights the duality of Wheatley's life as a celebrated poet/"African genius" and an enslaved woman.

The featured poetry will be read by Dr. Gloria House (Aneb Kgositsile), Kresge Eminent Artist and emeritus UM-Dearborn Professor of English. Composer Hayden will be joined in performance by Legacy.

Light refreshments will be available after the performance.
