Face Covering & Report Policy Updates

As the situation with the coronavirus continues to evolve, we remain committed to sharing information and updates to help you stay healthy and safe while we work towards a continuity of student learning and university operations.

Dear Colleagues,

As the situation with the coronavirus continues to evolve, we remain committed to sharing information and updates to help you stay healthy and safe while we work towards a continuity of student learning and university operations.

Updated Face Covering Policy

The latest executive order by Governor Whitmer includes the requirement of the use of a face covering inside public buildings and outdoors when social distancing cannot be maintained. The university has required face coverings inside campus buildings for many weeks to help ensure the health and safety of our campus community. The research is clear that wearing a face covering is one of the most effective tools we have for preventing the spread of COVID-19 and saving lives.

Beginning immediately, UM-Dearborn will now require all students, staff, faculty and visitors to wear a face covering that covers the mouth and nose while anywhere on campus grounds. This includes both when inside campus buildings and when outdoors. It is sometimes difficult or not top-of-mind to maintain distance from groups even while outdoors, so requiring face coverings outdoors will help slow the spread of the virus.

During the fall 2020 semester, faculty members will be required to wear face coverings when teaching in-person and students will be required to wear face coverings during in-person classes. The university will provide face coverings to students, faculty and staff, if needed. A face covering option with a clear panel is also being secured for faculty use when teaching, if desired. The process to obtain masks will be shared in August.

Faculty members that feel they will not be able to wear a face covering while teaching should contact human resources, before July 31, to either make accommodations or other arrangements. Staff members seeking accommodations should also contact human resources.

The full face covering policy is available on the EHS website, and includes a description of the limited exceptions to this rule.

The university will share details soon around the planned enforcement of the face covering policy.

Additional Policy Updates

In addition to the updated face covering policy, there have been a few changes to the policy for those reporting symptoms or illness related to COVID-19 and the coming to campus policy. Please review the questions below, in the “Work” section at the end of the following webpage.

  • Should I inform anyone at UM-Dearborn that I have tested positive for, or suspect I have, COVID-19?
  • I am a supervisor and one of my direct reports shared that they have COVID-19, what do I do?
  • I need or want to come into work/my office/campus, is this allowed? What do I need to do?

As a reminder, unless specified by a supervisor, everyone who can work from home must continue to do so. Visits to campus should only be considered if absolutely necessary.

Thank you for being a part of our community. By working together, we will keep everyone healthy and safe as we move toward reestablishment of more operations on campus.

Sincerely,

Laura L. Drabczyk
